What qualifications do you need to be an auditor?
The qualifications you need to be an auditor are typically postsecondary education and certifications.
Most auditor positions require at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field. Some even gain practical experience through summer or part-time internships with public accounting or business firms.
Some employers prefer those with a master's degree, either in accounting or business administration, with a concentration in accounting. Those with an associate's degree, as well as bookkeepers and accounting clerks, typically need several more years of relevant work experience to substitute for a bachelor's degree.
In general, auditors are high-level accountants responsible for reviewing financial statements and ensuring that the reports align with the accounting principles and legislative standards.
If they file a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), they are required by law to be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). However, for the most part, certifications are not required but can boost job prospects.
