What should a painter put on a resume?

By Zippia Team - Mar. 26, 2022

A painter should put skills and experience related to painting residential and commercial buildings on a resume. As a professional painter, you typically attack a room specifically - first trim, then the ceiling, walls, etc. Your resume should be no different.

The entire resume (from the profile summary to work experience to skills section) should show the hiring manager why you excel in a painting position.

To get started, you will want to write a strong profile summary. In one to four sentences, touch on highlights your related work history, some core skills, and an achievement.

For example, "Personable building painter with 2+ years' expertise in a commercial environment. Achieved company-highest client satisfaction rating according to exit surveys (97.53%)."

Next, you're going to want to elaborate on the specific experiences of working as a painter. Do not list work experience that does not relate to painting. Similar to the profile summary, you'll want to convey your experience using real-world examples and achievements and quantifiable measurements of success.

For example, "Identified alternate painting solution which led to a cost reduction of 17% while increasing productivity by 39.4%."

If you're just starting your career as a painter, focus on experiences that are painter-related job tasks and accomplishments so that the employer can easily picture you as the perfect candidate for the job. For example, maybe you worked at a hardware store that sold paint or volunteered for Habitat for Humanity.

If you have any painting certifications, such as OSHA Safety certificate, you should list that in a separate section. Many states require painters to obtain a license and register as a contractor. You may also have insurance to protect you from liability should anything go wrong. All of this should be represented on your resume.

Finally, be sure to also include a list of your core skills that you have touched on throughout your resume. We recommended including a mixture of hard and soft skills.
