What should be on a paralegal's resume?
Technical skills and accomplishments focused on clerical and research support services should be on a paralegal's resume - such as document preparation and review; interviewing clients and witnesses; research, investigations, and fact-checking; and trial preparation.
When creating a paralegal resume, you need to demonstrate that you can handle all aspects of the requirements mentioned in the job description. Be sure to carefully read over the job description and highlight any keywords and skills that you can include in your resume.
To get started, you will want to write a strong profile summary. In one to four sentences, introduce yourself as a paralegal - include your background and experience and highlight some key skills and accomplishments.
For example, "Detail-oriented paralegal with a strong background in drafting legal memorandums, motions, and correspondence. Has a passionate and professional work ethic that requires no guidance from attorneys or supervisors."
Next, you're going to want to elaborate on your specific experience working as a paralegal. Similar to the profile summary, you'll want to convey your experience using real-world examples and achievements and quantifiable measurements of success.
For example, "Provide legal, trial and administrative support for a team of 12 attorneys and three senior partners within a busy family law practice."
Finally, be sure to include a mixture of paralegal-specific skills (e.g., legal research, drafting research), IT skills (e.g., Proficiency in Excel, Word, Powerpoint, billing software), and soft skills (e.g., communication, organization).
