What should I study to become a judge?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Oct. 12, 2023

To become a judge, you should study law at an undergraduate level, attend law school to earn a Juris Doctor degree, and gain experience in the legal field.

Starting your journey to become a judge often begins with an undergraduate degree in law or a related field. However, it's important to note that some states or jurisdictions may not require a specific undergraduate degree.

  • Undergraduate Degree. Most future judges start their path with an undergraduate degree. Common majors include political science, history, business, or economics, as they are often extremely beneficial for success in law school. However, any major is generally acceptable as long as you can pass the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and secure admission to a law school.

  • Law School. After completing an undergraduate degree, aspiring judges must attend law school to earn a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. Law school typically takes three years of full-time study and includes courses in constitutional law, contracts, property law, civil procedure, and legal writing.

  • Legal Experience. After graduation from law school, it is important that you gain experience in the legal field. This could be as a lawyer or in another legal position. This experience provides practical insights into the judicial system and how courtrooms operate.

  • Judicial Clerkship. A judicial clerkship is also highly recommended as it provides direct experience working for a judge. Judicial clerks assist judges in their research and drafting of opinions, gaining invaluable insight into the judicial process.

Besides these educational requirements and experiences, aspiring judges often need to pass a state bar examination and have several years of work experience in law before they are eligible for appointment or election as a judge.
