What should I study to become a psychologist?
You should study psychology to become a psychologist. Not all psychologists start off by studying psychology. You can choose to study a related field, such as social work or sociology, while you obtain your bachelor's degree. Once you are working on your master's degree and beyond, the main focus should be on psychology.
In order to work as a psychologist, you must earn at least your master's degree, preferably in psychology. There are only certain positions that allow you to work as a psychologist with just a master's degree, and these positions are typically working in schools or other organizations.
If you want to become a clinical, counseling, or research psychologist, you need to complete your doctoral degree. With a doctoral degree, you will be eligible to work independently, and you can use the legal title of psychologist.
There are two choices when working on your doctoral degree. You can either pursue your doctor of philosophy degree (Ph.D.) or your doctor of psychology degree (PsyD). If you are more interested in a career in the research and academia side of psychology, then typically, you would pursue your Ph.D.
The PsyD is intended more for those who wish to apply their knowledge to providing psychology services to people.
