What skills do forklift operators need?
Forklift operators need skills that are related to both machine operation and other warehouse responsibilities. There are a variety of different types of forklifts and various warehouse tasks for operators with different skills and experience.
Forklift operators' primary responsibility is to efficiently move inventory and products within and outside of a warehouse. There are a number of different types of forklifts that require varied skills. Some of these machines are very specialized for use in unique situations.
There are seven different classes of forklifts, each somewhat different. Operators must be skilled in operating controls on these different types of machinery. In order to load and unload, hand and foot controls are used by operators.
Knowledge of weight limits is also important as some machines are rated at 3,000 pounds and others as much as 12,000 pounds.
In addition to machine operation, other tasks such as packing and labeling products are skills that operators are sometimes asked to complete. Operating other machinery such as a pallet jack is a desirable operator skill. All of these abilities broaden the scope of work that an operator can offer to employers.
