Where do neuropsychologists work?

Neuropsychology degree programs are typically offered at the doctoral level, and they can prepare you to work as a clinical neuropsychologist or a researcher in the field. Additionally, some neuropsychologists specialize in areas such as child psychology or experimental psychology.

Clinical neuropsychologists usually work directly with patients, while researchers seek to better understand the brain and its functions. In a program with a research focus, you could also prepare for a career in academia by participating in teaching assistantships. They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals and other medical settings, and psychology clinics.

Neuropsychologists who take the academic route typically work in universities or at research facilities. Alternatively, there is also the military route. As a government neuropsychologist, for instance, your job is to apply the principles of psychology to government agencies and institutions.

This can include working with state or local governments to determine how to meet hiring needs, conducting research on patients in public hospitals and clinics, or supporting job analysis and career development for government employees.
