Who owns Audible?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 28, 2022

Amazon owns Audible. However, Amazon and Audible memberships are different. Audible is a subsidiary of Amazon.

Audible had its first product released in 1997, a portable media player known as the Audible MobilePlayer. In 1999, Microsoft invested $11 million into the company and Amazon also bought a 5% stake in Audible. Then in 2008, Amazon purchased Audible for $300 million.

After Amazon's purchase, Audible began to produce its own content in the form of science fiction audiobooks and other projects. Amazon's purchase also brought about a change in the types of services the company offered, including acting workshops from A-list actors and actresses, and exclusive content.

The pricing model of the company is a variable subscription variety, with an a la carte approach. Now, Audible also functions as an audiobook creation exchange, which enables individual authors or publishers to work with professional actors to create audiobooks that then are sold on Amazon and iTunes.
