Who owns Netflix?

By Zippia Team - Aug. 22, 2022

Netflix is owned by co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings. While Hastings holds many company shares, Netflix has become a publicly-traded company and is therefore owned by various shareholders.

Founded in 1997 by Hastings and Marc Randolph, Netflix went public in 2002 and, although initially a marketing platform based on DVD rental, moved to a streaming format in 2007. Today Netflix retains the largest number of streaming subscribers with over 203 million and is second only to HULU in annual profitability.

The company has expanded its platform to include original TV and film content production, video game content creation, and partnerships with companies such as Sony and Starbucks. In 2021, Netflix expanded its streaming services to include nearly a dozen Central and South American countries.

With headquarter offices in California, Netflix maintains global headquarters in Asia, Europe, Australia, and South America. Globally, the company employs over 12,000 employees.
