City of Lockport company history timeline
The county was established in 1808, its name derived from an Iroquoian word meaning “bottomlands.” The principal communities are Niagara Falls, North Tonawanda, Lewiston, and Lockport, which is the county seat.

The first permanent settler in this region was Armstead Runyon, who built a homestead along Fiddyment Creek in 1830.

The falls are surrounded by parklands—including Niagara Falls State Park, New York’s oldest state park (established 1885). Among the other state parks are Whirlpool, Devil’s Hole, Wilson-Tuscarora, and Golden Hill.

The construction of the Sanitary and Ship Canal after 1895 halted the grain trade on the old canal and the Norton Company went bankrupt.

In addition, area railroads began running commuter trains to Chicago and the 1901 opening of the Chicago & Joliet Interurban Electric Railway encouraged commuting between Lockport, Joliet, and Chicago.
Additionally, the arrival of commuter train travel to Chicago and the birth of the Chicago and Joliet Interurban Electric Railway helped ensure Lockport's survival after its incorporation as a city in 1904.
The construction of the Calumet-Sag Channel north of Lockport, which began in 1911, cut off most of the water power to the town, and the remaining mills closed.
The area's economy revived after 1911 when the Texas Company decided to build its first refinery outside the Southwest on the northern boundary of Lockport.
However, the downward turn in Lockport's fortunes did not last long, and the region's economy revived after 1911 with the construction of the Texas Company's refinery on the north side of Lockport.
Two modern locks (1918) of the New York State Canal System replaced one of the sets of five locks; the remaining original series of locks now exist as a cascade of five waterfalls.
In 1950, after service in the Army, Chuck Mullen had a childhood friend who headed three Laundromats in the city of Lockport.
In 1968 the Will County Historical Society opened a canal museum in the old I&M Canal headquarters building.
In 2000, Chuck reached out to his niece Cherie Larsen for a Job answering phones and cleaning appliances.
