1850

The Smith Brothers (William and Andrew, the nationally advertised bearded “Trade” and “Mark”) made their first cough drops about 1850 in Poughkeepsie.

1854

Founded in 1687, the community became an incorporated village in 1799, and the city was chartered in 1854.

1869

The Bardavon is an 1869 former opera house where Graham Nash will perform in September.

The Cunneen-Hackett Cultural Center, built in 1869, is the oldest continually operating entertainment venue in New York State.

1887

Vassar Brothers Hospital opened in 1887, and admitted 80 patients in its first year.

1914

The last stop on Metro-North’s Hudson Line is a 1918 station in Poughkeepsie.

1944

FDR was the only President to win a fourth term in the White House: when Thomas E. Dewey from Pawling ran against him in 1944, it was the only time in American history when two men from the same county vied for the Presidency.

1960
