CHRhealth company history timeline

1965

Thousands of Americans, dwelling in suburbs and rural areas, suffering from major poverty and bad health, desperately needed health assistance. It was in December 1965 when the first modern community health center was established in Dorchester, Massachusetts – under the name, Columbia Point Health Center – by two faculty members and medical doctors, H. Jack Geiger of Harvard University and Count Gibson of Tufts University.

Funding for two such neighborhood health center projects was approved in 1965; the Delta Health Care Center in Mound Bayou, Mississippi and the other one in Boston, Massachusetts.

1987

Local physicians, government, and private organizations came together in 1987 to create Community Health Care (CHC) as a private, non-profit organization focused on meeting the needs of the underserved.

1989

Congress, in 1989, established the Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) program that asked for reimbursement for both Medicare and Medicaid.

1990

On the 25th anniversary of the clinic, in 1990, it was renamed the Geiger-Gibson Community Health Center and is still in operation today.

1993

CommunityHealth was founded in 1993 by Serafino Garella, MD, a board-certified internist and nephrologist.

The clinic opened in 1993.

1998

1998 NCHA StudyCompleted in 1998, the National Community Health Advisor Study helped identify core roles, competencies, and qualities of Community Health Workers.

2002

President George W. Bush, in 2002, launched a Health Center Expansion Program that led to an increase in the access to basic health care services in about 1,200 communities by establishing new and bigger health center clinics.

2005

The West Town clinic was renamed the Lederman Family Health Center in 2005, in recognition of a major gift from longtime friend and contributor Sam Lederman.

2007

2007 HRSA Workfoce StudyIn 2007, the Health Resources and Services Administration provided a comprehensive, national report on the Community Health Worker workforce.

2008

It was in the year 2008 that 1,080 CHCs gave primary health care to a population of more than 17.1 million people.

2009

By the year 2009 community health centers started receiving their funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and these health centers became available to a population of greater than 18 million people.

2010

In 2010, CommunityHealth opened a second clinic in Chicago’s south side Englewood neighborhood.

2010– Bureau of Labor StatisticsThe Bureau of Labor Statistics assigned an occupational code to Community Health Workers that made the exchange of accurate information more timely.

2013

2013 A number of states have taken to diverse, individual initiatives to advance the Community Health Worker infrastructure, professional identity, workforce development, and financing.

In 2013, with a partnership of physicians, hospitals, and government, CHC was able to expand its mission of clinical education with the opening of a new, state-of-the-art building.

2014

2014 — Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there are about 115,700 employed health educators and CHWs.

2014 — CDC publishes the Policy Evidence Assessment Report The CDC identified 14 Community Health Worker policy components and examined them using the Quality and Impact of Component (QuiC) Evidence Assessment method.

2016

2016- 16 states report having CHW standard operating procedures or certification laws in place.
