DuPage County Health Department company history timeline

1944

November 1,1944, the DuPage County Health Department is established through a referendum vote of 33,633 to 19,492.

1945

The DuPage County Health Department opens on March 13, 1945 in the DuPage County Courthouse, 201 Reber Street, Wheaton.

December 1945, the first Health Department budget is approved by the DuPage County Board of Supervisors.

1949

In 1949, the Health Department offers educational programs for dairies to teach new, safe milk ordinances.

1952

December 1952, the worst Polio epidemic in DuPage County history ended following 130 cases and 14 deaths.

1954

In April 1954, through the cooperation of the State Department of Health and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, DuPage County participates in the field trials of the Salk vaccine.

July 2, 1954 - The Health Department moved to 209 E Liberty Street, Wheaton.

1955

June 30, 1955, The DuPage County Health Department’s Annual Report titled “A Decade of Progress” is released.

In 1955 the estimated population of DuPage County is 182,000.

1961

In 1961, the Health Department moved to 222 Willow Street, Wheaton.

The Health Department first embraced technology in 1961 with the use of the County Treasurer’s IBM equipment to analyze causes of death in DuPage County to determine the best prevention method.

1964

In 1964, Mental Health services are offered for the first time.

1965

1965 – The estimated population of DuPage County is 385,000.

In 1965, a Mental Health Clinic opened at the Health Department at 222 Willow Street, Wheaton.

1968

1968, the DuPage County Health Department’s operating budget exceeds $1 million for the first time.

1971

In 1971, construction begins on a new home for the Health Department at 111 N County Farm Rd., Wheaton.

Also in 1971, the Health Department opened a venereal disease clinic, the first in DuPage County.

1973

1973 - The DuPage County Health Department moved to its own building at 111 N County Farm Road, Wheaton.

1975

1975 – The estimated population of DuPage County is 586,000.

1976

In 1976, decentralized services are added to three satellite offices:North Public Health Center (NPHC)1111 W Lake StreetAddison, IL 60101East Public Health Center (EPHC)1111 E Jackson StreetLombard, IL 60148Southeast Public Health Center (SEPHC)422 N Cass AvenueWestmont, IL 60559

1985

March 28, 1985 – The start of the largest foodborne illness outbreak in the history of the United States, when two suspected cases of salmonella are reported in DuPage County.

1985 – The estimated population of DuPage County is 705,100.

1986

In 1986, the DuPage County Board of Health, the Health Department’s governing body, grew to 11 members with the addition of three new members.

1987

1987, the Prenatal Clinic was established.

1988

1988, the expansion program of NPHC, EPHC, and SEPHC is completed.

1990

1990, the Mental Health Division opens the Women’s Substance Abuse Program.

1991

In 1991, expansion of Central Public Health Center in Wheaton begins.

1993

1993, the expansion of the Central Public Health Center is completed, providing an additional 26,107 square feet of space to the building..

1994

The 1994-95 Annual Report of the DuPage County Health Department, titled "50 Years of Service", states the estimated population of DuPage County is 843,084.

1998

The Health Department's 1998 Annual Report "Strengthening Community Ties" is the first to be posted electronically on the "new, greatly expanded website."

2004

in 2004, a countywide West Nile virus surveillance program was started.

2005

In 2005, the West Chicago Mental Health Center opened at 245 West Roosevelt Road.

2013

On December 13, 2013, Karen J. Ayala is named 10th Executive Director in the history of the DuPage County Health Department.

In 2013, DuPage Narcan program begins operations in response to the opioid epidemic.

2014

March 22, 2014 – A DuPage County Sheriff’s Deputy saves a life using Narcan, the first "save" using the opioid antidote in the County.

2015

October 16, 2015 – The DuPage County Health Department celebrates the opening of the new Community Center at 115 N County Farm Road, Wheaton.

2018

January 19, 2018 – The first meeting of the DuPage County Heroin/Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Taskforce.

October 14, 2018 – Linda A. Kurzawa, DuPage County Board of Health President passes away.
