Farmers Alliance Companies company history timeline

1888

Farmers Alliance began in 1888 in the small, rural community of McPherson, Kansas.

1889

In December 1889 leaders of the organization introduced the subtreasury plan, which called for the federal government to give farmers low-interest loans against nonperishable crops, which were to be stored in government-built warehouses.

1890

Introduced in both houses of Congress in February 1890, the bill quickly became buried in committee, never to be enacted.

The organization had three million members by 1890.

In Nebraska, Farmers' Alliances supporters had gained control of the state legislature by 1890.

By the summer of 1890 it claimed 100,000 members in Georgia, with more than 1,000 members in each of the following counties: Carroll, Cherokee, Cobb, Emanuel, Forsyth, Franklin, Gwinnett, Hall, and Paulding.

1891

In Ohio's gubernatorial election of 1891, the Populist candidate received less than one percent of the votes that were cast.

1892

Leaders of the Farmers’ Alliance therefore in 1892 founded a political party, the People’s, or Populist, Party, to pursue these goals and nominated James B. Weaver as their candidate in the 1892 presidential election.
