Frost Valley YMCA company history timeline

1901

In 1901 Camp Wawayanda was founded by Charles C. Scott on Lake Wawayanda in northern Sussex County, New Jersey, on land loaned for that purpose.

1916

Julius Forstmann – founder of the Forstmann Woolen Company – broke ground on what would become known as the Forstmann Castle in 1916.

1954

In 1954, due to the encroachment of commercial enterprise, the Andover site was sold.

1957

1957: Frost Valley Association is formed to run the Frost Valley Camp and Conference Center.

In 1957, a select group on Camp Wawayanda board members traveled to the Julius Forstmann estate in the heart of the Catskill Mountains in New York State to look over an exciting piece of property that was to be for sale.

1962

1962 brought the establishment of Wawayanda's sister camp, later named Camp Henry Hird.

1968

Frost Valley was incorporated in the State of New Jersey in 1968 as a separate YMCA. In this capacity, Frost Valley was established to serve numerous YMCAs and YWCAs for their camping and conference needs.

In 1968, the Teenage Adventure Camp commenced with the development of the Catskill Explorer program under the direction of Bud Cox and the continuation of the Canadian "Trailblazers" canoe trip under the direction of Digger Short.

1969

1969: Frost Valley establishes a year-round Environmental Education Center to introduce young people to the natural world and teach them how to protect it.

Realizing the educational opportunities available at Frost Valley with its fine facility, friendly staff, abundant wildlife and natural setting, schools throughout the New York area began sending students and their teachers to Frost Valley in 1969 for week-long resident experiences.

1975

1975: Executive Director Halbe Brown oversees the development of the Ruth Gottscho Kidney Dialysis Center at Frost Valley, the first of its kind anywhere.

In 1975 the Frost Valley YMCA joined with the Tison family to establish the Tison Trust, a wilderness preserve of 640 acres along the East Branch of the Neversink River.

1978

In September 1978 Frost Valley purchased and added an additional 1628 acres along the East Branch of the Neversink River.

1979

1979: Executive Director Halbe Brown brokers a global collaboration between Frost Valley and the Tokyo YMCA, extending a home base and respite in the United States to Japanese families living abroad, and designating Frost Valley as an international YMCA.

1981

1981: The Straus Center is renovated and opens as a conference and group retreat facility.

1998

1998: A Streamside Classroom is developed in association with the United States Geological Services.

2000

2000: The Educational Farm in the East Valley hosts campers and guests for the first time.

2007

2007: McLain Lodge undergoes renovations and reopens as Geyer Hall; a fully equipped business center.

2008

2008: The Guenther Family Wellness Center opens, replacing the old Smith Lodge, which served for decades as the camp infirmary.

2011

June 2011: Straus Center is renovated, becoming the new East Valley Lodge, opening for family and group retreats.
