Luthercare company history timeline

1949

Luthercare was founded in 1949 when a group of devoted Lutheran congregations recognized the need for quality living and care for seniors as they aged.

1955

The first residents began moving into the Lutheran Sunset Home in March 1955 and the official opening was held on June 11 of that year.

1968

In 1968, the Lutheran Theological Seminary located at 212 Wiggins Avenue moved to the University of Saskatchewan campus.

Residents argued that the city had misapplied a 1968 zoning bylaw when granting the building permit.

1974

In 1974, City Council decided to go ahead with the construction of a 22-storey high-rise development.

1975

In February 1975, the local zoning appeals board ruled that the city’s plans to construct a 22-storey high-rise senior housing complex were to go through.

1978

With legal battles over, the 195-suite Luther Tower officially opened in 1978.

1990

Luthercare began its work in childcare in the 1990’s.

1991

Luthercare’s first center, Lebanon Valley Child Care and Learning Center began on the campus of Lebanon Valley College, Annville in 1991.

1995

Two community day programs – Travel, Eat, Meet, Talk (TEMT) and Live Smart – began in 1995 to serve adults in the community who can benefit from increased social interaction.

2007

Since 2007 Luthercare has more than doubled the number of Pre-K Counts classrooms and now offers a Pre-K Counts program in each of its early learning centers.

2015

In 2015 the Mentoring Program was reconceived with funding from United Way of Lancaster County to pursue the bold goal of helping 100% of Lancaster’s children to be kindergarten ready.
