In 1993, after passing a rigorous selection process and raising a large amount of funds, the Senior Orchestra was off on an experience of a lifetime--performing at New York City’s Carnegie Hall.
The MSYO recorded its first CD in 1997, which includes a performance of Metamorphosis, a composition by then MSYO principal violist, Andrew Norman.
In 1998 he auditioned for and was accepted to the Minnesota Orchestra.
With Maestro Pearce’s departure in 1999, an extensive conductor search was undertaken.
In 2006 Freed was selected from more than 100 applicants in 31 states and 9 countries to become the ninth conductor of the Mankato Symphony Orchestra.
The MSO previously had performed on stage with Patti LuPone back in September 2007 for the Gallo Center’s very first concert.

The Nightmare Before Christmas in Concert in 2017 was wildly successful and attracted families from all over the state hoping to see something strange at the Gallo Center.
Celebrating 75 years in the 2019-20 season, the MSO remains one of Mississippi’s greatest cultural forces.
The LA Phil also won a grammy in 2019 for their recorded performance of his piece, Sustain.
