Northern Regional Hospital company history timeline

1957

Founded in 1957, Northern Regional Hospital is located in Mount Airy, North Carolina and serves the northwest Piedmont region of NC and neighboring counties in southwest Virginia.

1957: With 98 beds, Northern Regional Hospital opened its doors to patients in 1957.

1958

1958: The Martin Memorial School of Nursing was re-established next to the hospital in a facility later known as the Martin Memorial Building.

1969

1969: An intensive/coronary unit, which was one of the first such facilities in a rural community hospital, was added in 1969 along with a 24-hour emergency department and a physical therapy service.

1972

Discussions on consolidating small hospitals in Dover-Foxcroft, Dexter, and Milo into a regional hospital gained momentum in 1972.

1974

1974: The construction of a 14,000 square foot ambulatory care addition, which included pathology, radiology, outpatient/emergency and office space added on to the hospital’s north wing, was completed in 1974.

1978

The $5.1 million Mayo Regional Hospital opened to patients on April 9, 1978, with a staff of 110.

1982

In 1982, the state authorized HAD 4 to purchase Plummer Hospital in Dexter.

1989

A $1.3 million medical office building was constructed in 1989 on the east side of the old Mayo building.

1991

John K. Lockhart served as the hospital’s first administrator, a position he held until 1991.

1995

Since 1995, Mayo has operated a physician practice management department, with primary care offices in Corinth, Dexter, Dover-Foxcroft, Guilford, and Milo.

2000

In 2000, the hospital constructed a new ambulance garage for its Emergency Medical Service on Dwelley Avenue and received state Certificate of Need approval to begin a major expansion/renovation project on the main hospital building.

2002

2002: As part of its commitment to excellence, the hospital completed an extensive $26 million expansion and renovation project that has enhanced access to quality care in a safe environment.

2007

2007: Renovations continued within the hospital as the Nuclear Medicine department expanded and ground was broken for the new Surgical Services expansion.

2009

2009: In June 2009, the 58,000 square foot expansion of Surgical Services was completed and The Surgery Center was opened.

2019

Northern Hospital of Surry County, a 133-bed, nationally recognized hospital in Mount Airy, NC, has changed its name to Northern Regional Hospital, effective October 1, 2019.

2020

In 2020, Mayo Regional Hospital officially becomes the tenth hospital of Northern Light Health and changes it's name to Northern Light Mayo Hospital.

2022

Northern Regional Hospital nationally recognized with an ‘A’ Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade May 19, 2022

Northern Regional Hospital announces 2022 scholarship winners June 7, 2022

Northern Regional Hospital nationally recognized byAmerican Heart Association for high-quality stroke care July 1, 2022
