Saint Patrick High School history

The Christian Brothers first came to Newburgh in 1886 to staff the boys division of St Patrick’s Parish grammar school.

The high school building had previously been the clubhouse of the Newburgh Wheelmen's (Bicycle) club designed by Newburgh architect Frank E. Estabrook in 1896.

In 1927, two more classrooms and two new faculty members were added, which indicated the growth of the high school and grade school.

The gym built in 1937 and the St Patrick Youth Center completed the St Patrick School complex.

In June, 1952, the old Saint Patrick closed its doors, and in September, classes for its students started in the Saint Mel High School building with a special schedule of afternoon classes.

Classes in the new Saint Patrick began in September 1953, although the building was not completely finished.

A coeducational school was opened in 1958 with the Dominican Sisters taking charge of all eight grades.

The administrative structure changed in 1987 when the position of President was created.

In 1990, a board of trustee model was incorporated and adopted by the Christian Brothers.

The Administration and Board of Trustees became instrumental forces in the strategic planning and development of the school’s first ever capital campaign, Vision 2000.

During 2008, interactive, electronic Smart Boards were installed in all the classrooms, allowing for navigation of the internet.

In 2012, Apple TV was added to all the classrooms and two iPad carts with 35 iPads in each were purchased for grades K-5 and the middle school introduced the One-to-One iPad Program.

Then, in 2015, the state-of-the-art Ettore L. Giovannetti Health and Wellness Center was constructed and unveiled.
