Sainta company history timeline

1863

The current depiction of Santa Claus is based on images drawn by cartoonist Thomas Nast for Harper’s Weekly beginning in 1863.

1931

The image was further defined by the popular Santa Claus advertisements created for the Coca-Cola Company from 1931 by illustrator Haddon Sundblum.

1964

Haddon created his final version of Santa Claus in 1964 but for several decades to follow Coca-Cola advertising featured images of Santa based on Haddon’s original works.

1966

The franchise was founded on November 1, 1966.

The franchise was awarded on All Saints Day, November 1, 1966.

The National Football League awarded its 16th franchise to New Orleans on November 1, 1966.

1970

One of the franchise’s early bright moments came on November 8, 1970, when Tom Dempsey kicked an NFL record-breaking 63-yard field goal to defeat the Detroit Lions by a score of 19–17 in the final seconds of the game.

No doubt the most famous play was Tom Dempsey's record 63-yard field goal in 1970 that enabled New Orleans to beat Detroit 19-17 on the game's final play.

1974

They played their home games in Tulane Stadium through the 1974 NFL season.

1975

Still, they managed to thrill their fans with some exciting victories and memorable moments first at Tulane Stadium and later at the 69,056-seat Superdome beginning in 1975.

1982

An unexpected star of those playoffs was placekicker Morten Andersen, who was named to six Pro Bowls in his 13 seasons with the team (1982–94) and would later go on to set the NFL record for most career points scored.

1983

In 1983 the team’s fans adopted a long-standing chant used at local high school and collegiate football games.

1985

He purchased the Saints from John Mecom in 1985 after he learned from Governor Edwin W. Edwards that the team was on the verge of being sold to parties interested in moving the team to Jacksonville, Florida.

1987

The Saints’ first winning season came in 1987, as a high-scoring offense led by quarterback Bobby Hebert and a stout defense starring linebackers Rickey Jackson and Sam Mills combined to propel the Saints to a 12–3 record and a playoff berth.

1990

In 1990 the team began a streak of three consecutive years of playoff berths and first-round postseason losses.

2000

The Saints had a surprising turnaround in 2000, however, winning 10 games to qualify for the postseason and defeating the reigning Super Bowl champion St Louis Rams for the franchise’s first playoff victory.

In 2000, former NFL linebacker and long-time assistant Jim Haslett was hired as the new head coach.

2001

During the Saints’ 2001 negotiations with the state of Louisiana, rumors circulated that Benson would seek relocation if his requests which included renovations to the Superdome, a new practice facility in suburban Metairie, and escalating annual payments from the state to the team could not be met.

2009

In 2009 the Saints won their first 13 games of the season and qualified for the playoffs as the NFC’s highest-seeded team.

2010

New Orleans Saints, American professional gridiron football team based in New Orleans that plays in the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). The Saints have won one Super Bowl championship (2010).

2011

The Saints had the NFL’s top-ranked offense once more in 2011 (for the fourth time in a six-year span) and again won 13 games, but the team was eliminated in the divisional round of the postseason by the San Francisco 49ers.

2012

As punishment for their roles in the program, Payton was suspended for the entire 2012 NFL season, former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams (who joined the Rams earlier in the 2012 off-season) was suspended indefinitely, and general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended for eight games.

Following that tumultuous off-season, the Payton-less Saints posted a disappointing 7–9 record in 2012, but the team rebounded the following year after he returned to the sidelines, winning 11 games and earning a playoff berth.

2017

An outstanding group of rookies helped the Saints break out of their rut in 2017, as the team won 11 games and a division title.

2018

The Saints bettered their regular-season play in 2018, winning 13 games to clinch the top seed in the NFC playoffs that year.

2019

The Saints tied for the best record in the NFC in 2019 (13–3) but—owing to New Orleans losing tie-breakers to the other two teams with that record—the team did not earn a postseason bye and had to play in the opening round of the playoffs, where it was upset by the Vikings at home.
