Sanger company history timeline

1888

So, in 1888, with the rails laid between Fresno and Porterville and the “Sanger Junction” established, Centerville people and hardy pioneers from the nearby hills were settling along the railroad.

The opening of the railroad line for traffic in 1888 gave the new Sanger a healthy start.

1889

However, the couple spent several years with their only daughter, Miss Alice B. Sanger, after she went to Washington in 1889 to become the first woman clerk in the White House.

1890

There were no churches or schools here until the early 1890’s, and the few houses built prior to that time stuck out like sore thumbs on the unbroken, level land that had previously been covered with grain.

1891

The name was changed in 1891 to A. Harris and Co.

1902

Lehman died ten years later on March 19, 1912 in Waco. It became evident upon the deaths of the founding brothers that it was their combined efforts that made the store a "household name." Philip died on April 12, 1902 at the age 61 while visiting Pasadena, California.

1911

Early law and order was kept by county officers who doggedly fought against “self-made laws”. A city government ruled by a city council was established in 1911 at the time of the town’s incorporation.

1912

Lehman died ten years later on March 19, 1912 in Waco.

1914

In 1914, Sanger launched her own feminist publication, The Woman Rebel, advocating for birth control.

1916

In 1916, she opened the first birth control clinic in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

1918

Later that same year Sam died in Waco on December 18, 1918 at the age 75.

But business boomed during the actual war as industry production increased throughout the country, and on December 17, 1918, Sanger Brothers incorporated.

1923

Alex disbanded the wholesale department in 1923.

1926

Due to continued financial problems, the stockholders decided to sell the store on August 2, 1926 to Stiffel, Nicholas and Co.

Total family control ended with the final sale September 13, 1926.

1929

In 1929, she formed the National Committee on Federal Legislation for Birth Control to lobby Congress for legislation that would permit doctors to prescribe birth control.

1931

On March 14, 1931 the stores in Fort Worth and Waco were closed.

1936

In 1936, the courts made it legal for doctors to prescribe birth control.

1942

Sanger retired in 1942 and moved to Tucson, Arizona, though she remained a passionate advocate for birth control.

1950

He remained at the head of A. Harris and Co. until his death in February 1950.

1951

On July 9, 1951 Sanger Brothers was sold to Federated Department Stores, Inc.

1960

In her later life, Sanger spearheaded the effort that resulted in the modern birth control pill by 1960.

1961

On February 6, 1961 a merger created Sanger-Harris Department Stores, Inc.
