What You'll Do:
Provides observation, support, feedback, resources and professional development to meet the specialized needs of Educational Interpreters and Signing Paraprofessionals
Transliterates and interprets, using SignLanguage, for the Deaf Hard of Hearing (DHH) student
Acts as primary substitute for an Educational Interpreter, updates Interpreter schedules, and contacts agency Interpreter substitutes when coverage is needed
Provides interpreting and tutoring support to students during general or special education classes, music, testing situations, and medical services
Serves as a resource person for sign vocabulary and organizes a database of appropriate strategies to compensate for unknown signs
Acts as a part of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team and supports the accommodations and modifications specified, implementing them under the direction of a teacher
Under the direction of staff, is responsible for the maintenance and use of specialized equipment and the maintenance of hearing assistive and adaptive technology

SUMMARY: The job of SignLanguageInterpreter is done for the purpose/s of facilitating communication between persons who are deaf and/or hard of hearing and others; conveying teacher instruction; assisting students with daily activities; providing voice to sign and sign to voice support; participating as a team member to plan, review and share information; and serving as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with students who are hard of hearing and/or deaf.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for supporting deaf and hard-of-hearing students, school staff, peers and others by facilitating communication, spoken and signed, through signlanguage.
Job Tasks Descriptions
Facilitate all communication between deaf and hard of hearing students, staff, peers and others by using appropriate signlanguage. Use signlanguage appropriate for learning level of students and adapt signlanguage level and/or mode to meet the communication needs of students. Ensure appropriate logistics for background noise levels, environmental lighting, student seating and use of adaptive devices. Scribe for students that are receiving the service as stated on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Tutor academic classes and lessons as needed under the supervision of a Licensed Teacher.
Record daily documentation of all student-related activity. Maintain required records and files.
Prepare instructional visual/tactile aids and prepare for future lessons.
Consult with team to ensure student is meeting current IEP goals.
Advocate for students by communicating students' social, emotional, and academic progress and needs with appropriate staff and by assisting staff and peers in understanding hearing loss/deaf culture, signlanguage rates and use of interpreters/tutors.
May assist multi-needs students with toileting and/or medical needs.
Attend appropriate in-services, building meetings, training, IEP meetings, parent conferences and/or school functions.
Foster student independence and peer relations by introducing signlanguage to hearing peers.
Provide students who are deaf or hard of hearing with equal access to academic and nonacademic activities, individually or in groups (e.g. regular classroom, library, computer lab, cafeteria, recess, sports, assemblies, etc.) for the purpose of meeting the students educational ands social needs within a school setting.

POSITION SUMMARY

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Interpret for and tutors students with deafness or hearing impairments. Services will be provided within the classroom or other educationally related environments.
Communicate to the Deaf Educator assignments and academic or other needs of the students.
Modify lessons under the teacher's direction for student success.
Spend the majority of time working directly with individual children; spends minimal time on typing, making copies, correcting papers and other clerical tasks.
Serve as a facilitator of communication: to interpret. When the need arises for both interpreting and some other task (e.g. recess/hall supervision, tutoring, etc.), interpreting takes priority and should not be interrupted.
Assist with the setup of note taking services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, when necessary and appropriate.
Participate in educational team activities either in person or via a report. Input from the interpreter may involve information regarding communication strategies and progress related to the child's use of the interpreter.
Serve as a liaison between the students who are deaf or hard of hearing, hearing peers, staff and faculty members.
Provide interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom, extracurricular activities and parent meetings when requested in advance.
At times, when it does not interfere with their service as interpreters, educational interpreters may be asked to assist the teacher with some of the more routine classroom duties.
Use any scheduled preparation time (comparable to teacher preparation time) to preview materials, conference with teachers, record data in logs, research signs, etc.
Maintain confidentiality.
Maintain professional standards as delineated in the Code of Ethics of the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
Participate in necessary inservice training programs as assigned and take responsibility for keeping current with training and certification requirements.
Perform other duties assigned by the principal when this does not conflict with the primary responsibility of interpreting.

2. Tutor Deaf/Hard of Hearing students (under the supervision of coordinating Teacher of the Deaf), both in and out of the classroom individually or in small groups by reinforcing concepts taught in the mainstream classes; assisting with missed assignments; modeling language; reinforcing vocabulary, study skills and life skills; assisting in learning variations of sign systems; developing of language concepts; changing CASE/PSE into written English; and teaching students the role of the interpreter, students' rights and responsibilities in how to use an interpreter.
3. As a member of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing student's education team, communicate with the team (e.g., mainstream teachers, teachers of the Deaf and support staff) to give and receive appropriate information/progress/problems that may impact a student's performance or learning, including, but not limited to, mode of communication, tutoring strategies, educational goals of student, curriculum content, classroom goals and student educational rights and services. May assist with personal hearing equipment (e.g. helping a student put hearing aids in) and/or assist with district hearing equipment (e.g. DM systems). May be asked to support instructors on monitoring behavior during class and extra-curricular activities; follow through with behavior programs established for individual students; use various equipment, augmentative communication systems or adaptations, any OT/PT requirements set forth in student I.E.P. (individual educational plan) and any medical conditions that require staff monitoring. Analyze and review instructional material to prepare for content and message delivery. Interpret and/or transliterate for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, or Deaf/Hard of Hearing staff at parent/teacher conferences, staff department meetings, district level meetings, in-services, and other required training. Purpose Statement
The job of Educational Interpreter (JC567) is done for the purpose/s of facilitating communication between persons who are deaf and/or hard of hearing and others; conveying teacher instruction; assisting students with daily activities; providing voice to sign and sign to voice support; participating as a team member to plan, review and share information; and serving as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with students who are hard of hearing and/or deaf.
This job reports to the Director-Special Services
Essential Functions
Acts as a resource to special education for the purpose of supporting students and staff.
Assists as a resource to regular education for the purpose of orienting staff to the functions of an interpreter.
Assists in modifying classroom logistics for the purpose of meeting the needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Interprets or transliterates all language necessary during classroom instruction (e.g. language mode that matches the student's communication level, etc.) for the purpose of facilitating effective communication.
Maintains daily notebook/log for the purpose of reporting student progress on objectives and daily work.
Monitors individual students for the purpose of providing assistance as needed and ensuring a safe and positive learning environment.
Participates in meetings (e.g. in-service, workshops, IEPs, parent/teacher meetings, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or conveying information related to the general goals of education to parents and/or students who may be deaf or hard of hearing.
Prepares for daily classroom lectures and activities (e.g. modify classroom logistics, lighting, seating, optimum visual, etc.) for the purpose of providing a learning environment that meets the differing needs of students for learning outcomes.
Provides support/tutoring to students who are deaf or hard of hearing for the purpose of facilitating communication and/or reinforcing classroom objectives under the direct supervision of the teacher of the deaf /hard of hearing.
Provides students who are deaf or hard of hearing with equal access to academic and nonacademic activities, individually or in groups (e.g. regular classroom, library, computer lab, cafeteria, recess, sports, assemblies, etc.) for the purpose of meeting the students educational and social needs within a school setting.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Have strong command of grammatical structure and evidence of command of complex instruction for complete comprehension. Speech is effortless and smooth; rate and production approach that of a native speaker comfortably.
Interpret: the process of changing spoken English into the preferred manual mode of communication for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing student, or vice versa.
Transliterate: the process of changing spoken English into a manual communication mode that maintains the grammar and syntax of the English language, or vice versa.
Translate: the process of interpreting the spoken English preferred manual mode of communication into spoken English, or vice versa.
2. Tutor Deaf/Hard of Hearing students (under the supervision of coordinating Teacher of the Deaf), both in and out of the classroom individually or in small groups by reinforcing concepts taught in the mainstream classes; assisting with missed assignments; modeling language; reinforcing vocabulary, study skills and life skills; assisting in learning variations of sign systems; developing of language concepts; changing CASE/PSE into written English; and teaching students the role of the interpreter, students' rights and responsibilities in how to use an interpreter.
3. As a member of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing student's education team, communicate with the team (e.g., mainstream teachers, teachers of the Deaf and support staff) to give and receive appropriate information/progress/problems that may impact a student's performance or learning, including, but not limited to, mode of communication, tutoring strategies, educational goals of student, curriculum content, classroom goals and student educational rights and services. May assist with personal hearing equipment (e.g. helping a student put hearing aids in) and/or assist with district hearing equipment (e.g. DM systems). May be asked to support instructors on monitoring behavior during class and extra-curricular activities; follow through with behavior programs established for individual students; use various equipment, augmentative communication systems or adaptations, any OT/PT requirements set forth in student I.E.P. (individual educational plan) and any medical conditions that require staff monitoring. Analyze and review instructional material to prepare for content and message delivery. Ensure appropriate logistics (e.g., lighting, seating, etc.). May be asked to assist Deaf Education Department staff by preparing instructional materials and various clerical duties as Interpreter time allows (e.g., scheduling interpreters for extra-curricular and after school activities, copying materials, and documenting information for DH/H Department, etc.).
4. Interpret and/or transliterate confidential in-school individual and group counseling/mental health sessions, disciplinary interactions, disciplinary hearings, and physical/occupational/speech therapy sessions between Deaf/Hard of Hearing student and staff. Interpret and/or transliterate for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, or Deaf/Hard of Hearing staff at parent/teacher conferences, staff department meetings, district level meetings, in-services, and other required training. Interpret and/or transliterate for Deaf/hard of hearing parents of students in the District at parent/teacher conferences, back-to-school nights, after school performances, individual meetings and staff meetings. May provide Deaf awareness education to hearing staff and students through staff in-services, student groups and one-on-one communication. Promote positive public relations between the Deaf education program, the school and the community.
5. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
• Degree from an Interpreter Preparation Program (IPP) (Associates or Bachelors as required by IPP).
• Proficient in use of Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE)/Pidgin Signed English (PSE), and/or American SignLanguage (ASL).
• No experience required; one (1) year of experience preferred in educational interpreting.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, or CERTIFICATIONS:
• Criminal background check required for hire.
• Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) 3.5 or above.
