Job Responsibilities The Division of Court Services at the South Carolina Judicial Branch is seeking a motivated individual to join our team as Staff Interpreter I - Spanish. The Staff Interpreter I - Spanish provides professional interpreting services to ensure individuals with limited English proficiency have equal access to the South Carolina judicial process. Working primarily in courtrooms (and occasionally remotely), the interpreter facilitates communication between Spanish-speaking parties and court personnel by accurately converting spoken and written English to Spanish and vice versa. This position operates under the supervision of the Staff Interpreter Manager and supports various court proceedings across the state.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION

* Interpret spoken communication using simultaneous and consecutive methods during hearings, trials, and other court proceedings.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
* High School Diploma AND have reached the "otherwise qualified" level of court interpreting in South Carolina including completing the Two-Day Workshop, passing the Written Examination, and passing an oral proficiency assessment (advanced-high or higher).
* Full certification as a court interpreter from either the Federal Court Interpreter Certification Examination; AND have the skills necessary to pass the Oral Examination for Court Interpreters to become fully certified within two (2) years.
* Ability to accurately interpret from English into Spanish and from Spanish into English via sight translation, consecutive interpreting, and simultaneous interpreting.
* At least three (3) years of court interpreting experience; OR one (1) year of court interpreting experience and five (5) years of legal, conference, or medical interpreting experience or a combination thereof.
Preferred Qualifications
* A Bachelor's degree or higher in either interpreting or Spanish from a U.S. college or university.
* A college degree from an accredited university in a Spanish-speaking country; passing the Written Examination at 80% or above, passing an oral proficiency assessment (advanced-high or higher) and passing all three parts of the Oral Examination (sight translation, consecutive interpreting, and simultaneous interpreting) at 70% or above.
* Have the skills necessary to pass an assessment AND provide documentation of passing a translation assessment via ALTA or a similar program within six (6) months of hire date.

An employee in this class is responsible for transliterating/interpreting in the classroom or at school-related activities for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Daily directions are provided by the general education teacher and/or the teacher of the deaf. The employee consults with the teachers when problems arise. Errors can seriously inhibit the progress of student learning. Limited supervision is provided.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Competence in the communication modality used by the student who is deaf or hard of hearing.
Competence in English grammar, including syntax, spelling and punctuation.
Working knowledge of typical language development.
Strong interpersonal skills in relating to students and adults.
Working knowledge of subjects being interpreted.
Understanding of deafness and its impact on language development.
Skill in expressive transliterating/interpreting at a rate commensurate with conversational speech and class lectures.
Adequate reverse interpreting/transliterating skill while maintaining the integrity of the message.
Ability to work as part of an Individualized Education Program team.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Facilitates communication between the student and his peers and the student and adults in the school environment.

Position Summary:
The role of the Medical Interpreter is to provide services for our Limited English Proficiency (LEP) Patients by breaking down the language barrier. Medical Interpreters provide accurate medical interpretation of critical medical information between Cooperative Health Staff and patients. Travel amongst all clinical sites as needed to provide English/target language interpretations. Act as a cultural consultant to staff and as advocate for non-English speaking patients/families. Assesses and monitor the patient's understandings of the information conveyed and keeps physicians/staff informed as to the level of that understanding. The Coordinator will also provide ongoing training and testing for employees who are designated as medical interpreters.
Principal Responsibilities:
* Performs medical interpretation/translation for patients and their families, including in-group settings such as family conferences.
* Makes notations in the patient's chart indicating the origin of the request for interpretation or translation, the nature of the service provided (such as interpreting treatment orders, pharmacy instructions) and an assessment of the patient's understanding and level of acceptance of the information. Ensures the above occurs accurately and consistently with all staff under the direction of the ISC.
* Translates correspondence, medical histories, medical consent forms, medical procedures and instructions, legal documents, manuals, brochures, and other pertinent documents as necessary.
* Assesses patient's/family's comprehension of "informed consent" as needed. Advises physician/patient care staff of any need for clarification.
* Ensures access to community resources for non-English speaking patients and their families.
* Participate in monthly medical interpreter meetings.
* Fill in as needed at any of the Cooperative Health locations for interpretive services.
* Works with management to ensure ADA and national interpreter standards are met and complied with.
* Ability to handle protected health information (PHI) in a manner consistent with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
* Maintains up to date data sheets
* Ability to work well with all individuals at all levels of the organization
* Bi-annual Medical Terminology Testing.
* Other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience :
* High School diploma or equivalent
