The interpreter facilitates effective communication between the student, teachers, peers, and staff using American Sign Language and spoken English, ensuring full access to classroom instruction and school activities. This position is part-time, approximately 2 hours per day during the school year. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Provide accurate, impartial, and age-appropriate interpretation of classroom instruction, discussions, and related school communications between English and ASL. * Support the student's educational access by interpreting for core academic classes, small-group activities, or other school events as outlined in the student's IEP. * Collaborate regularly with the classroom teacher, special education staff, and other support providers to align interpreting services with instructional goals. * Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality, following the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct and Connecticut regulations. * Prepare in advance by reviewing lesson materials, vocabulary, and relevant content when possible. * Communicate with the special education case manager or administrator regarding any concerns about the student's access, communication needs, or classroom environment. * Participate in IEP meetings or student support meetings as needed. * Maintain annual state registration with the Connecticut Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) in accordance with C.G.S. §46a-33a. Qualifications: * High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in interpreting, deaf studies, or related field preferred. * Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English. * Current registration as an interpreter with the Connecticut Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS), as required by C.G.S. §17a-838 and §46a-33a. * Holds recognized national or state interpreter credentials acceptable to the Interpreting Standards Board (e.g., RID, NAD, EIPA 3.5+, or equivalent). * Prior experience interpreting in educational settings preferred. * Knowledge of deaf culture and sensitivity to the communication and developmental needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Contract Responsibilities: Provides consecutive in person and virtually both by phone and video remote first-person interpretation. Follows interpreter protocols and procedures as required by Propio L.S. clients. Follows all Propio L.S. policies and procedures related to information confidentiality and interpreter ethics. Maintains strict patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, GLBA and/or regulatory requirements or policies and standards. Establishes and maintains quality service and positive interaction with all patients, customers, visitors, health care providers, and clinical employees. Continuously improves vocabulary and specialized subject matter knowledge, as required for various clients, such as medical, legal, social services, etc. Requirements: Submission of updated Resume in English at time of Application. Must be at least 18 years of age. High school diploma or GED equivalent Intermediate level computer skills Access to reliable transportation Ability to provide documentation of updated vaccinations to include but not limited to (dependent of location, federal and local regulations and business policies for healthcare and others): TB, MMR, Varicella, Hep B (or declination), TDAP and Seasonal Influenza (Flu) and Covid Successful completion of a drug test and Background Check & Security Screen. This position coordinates the system of interpretation requests, arranges coverage of those requests and maintains data on interpretation needs. The Interpreter/Cultural Mediator assists hospital staff to develop cultural competency in working with Latino populations. Education and/or Experience Required: Experience Required: Fluency in spoken and written Spanish and English. Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills. Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the CCMC STANDARDS.
