SUMMARY:
Under direction, interprets/transliterates Signing Exact English or other manual sign system, and vice versa, to facilitate communication between hearing and deaf/hard of hearing individuals; serve as a liaison between deaf/hard of hearing students, hearing students and teachers/staff; and perform related work as required.

Interpret in all academic situations and in all student service areas.
Have the skill to match a variety of language and cognitive needs.
Position self in a location that provides the best distance, lighting, background and angle for the student viewing of teacher, media and interpreter. Interpreter will be required to stand or sit for long periods of time.
Cooperate with teacher in receiving an overview of coming week's work to become familiar with content and technical vocabulary.
Direct student's questions to teacher and teacher's questions to student.
Interpret communication and interaction between hearing and hearing-impaired students as appropriate.
Provide appropriate input as requested for record keeping of program data.
Maintain proficiency in receptive and expressive language skills through acquisition of PDUs and/or CEUs.
Maintain confidentiality of all private conversations between school staff and students concerning personal problems or grades.
Provides information and orientation to deaf/hard of hearing students in emergency situations.
Report to appropriate personnel any information that could be detrimental to the hearing-impaired student, other students, or to school.
Understand role in performing behavior management methods in classroom.
Attend IEP (Individual Education Plan) meetings as either an interpreter or as a participant of the team, but not as both.
Adapt, accommodate, modify and supplement curriculum as specified by the IEP team and directed by the special education case manager.
Encourage independence in student and avoid development of inappropriate dependence within the student/interpreter relationship.
Works collaboratively with the student's educational team and/or other signlanguageinterpreters.
Participate in activities, in-services and skill building workshops to improve knowledge in interpreting, transliterating the educational process and issues relating to deaf culture.
Orient staff and students on the interpreter's function. Primary responsibilities and diverse roles.
Adhere to the tenets of the Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf Code of Ethics or any official revised versions.
Perform other reasonable duties that from time to time may be assigned to meet the usual and unusual demands placed on the organization.
Comply with ESD Performance Standards.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Individual will hold a valid driver's license and have reliable, insured transportation for required travel between schools.
EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE:
An Interpreter training program and/or college course work required. Achieve a passing score of 3.5 or above on the EIPA Performance Test or hold RID NIC, CI or CT Certification and
A). Hold a Bachelor's or Associate's Degree from an Interpreter Education Program or in a related educational field; or
B). Achieve a passing score on the EIPA Written Test

Position Summary

The Temporary SignLanguageInterpreter position is based as needed, hourly, and reports to the SignLanguageInterpreting and Transcription Coordinator.
Temporary SignLanguageInterpreters must exhibit professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, and the ability to create a welcoming, inclusive, accessible and professional atmosphere on campus. This person must exhibit cultural humility and agility, with the ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Minimum Requirements
• One year of experience interpreting
• Successful completion of a formal two- or four-year interpreter training program or equivalent
• Fluent ASL and English language skills and ability to accurately interpret and convey higher-level educational content and concepts
• Hold a Provisionary, Generalist, or Supervisory License from the Oregon State Board of SignLanguageInterpreters.
Professional Competencies
• Demonstrated ability to utilize a wide range of signlanguage systems (i.e. ASL, PSE, ProTactile ASL)
• Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds, including international students, students with disabilities, students of color, and other underrepresented groups in university settings

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Interpretation will include interactions during hospital admissions, hospital discharges, clinical visits including specialty clinics, outpatient surgeries(pre-op and post-op) outpatient diagnostics, schools, and sometimes emergency room visits.
Follow all Linguava and client protocols described in the Linguava employee handbook and the national standards of practice. This includes but is not limited to: educating patients, families, and providers on your role as the interpreter. Checking yourself in and out of appointments on time and staying for the full scheduled duration. Call and advise Linguava when you have any cancellations in order to attempt to replace that appointment with another.
Manage an organized expense report to be updated regularly with mileage travel to and from all appointments. Have the report ready to turn in once a month by the predetermined due date.

Certified or Qualified Healthcare Interpreter through the State Of Oregon (OHA) -

* Assist teachers in providing small group and individual instruction. * Assist teachers in all areas of their work. * Correct daily work assignments of students in all areas. * Operate various pieces of equipment, i.e., copy machines, video equipment, typewriters, computers, recorders, etc.
* Assist individual students in teacher-monitored classrooms.
* Assist teachers in monitoring individual student objectives.
* Provide for student's safety.
* Assist students with the development of self-help skills, speech and fine and gross motor skills.
* Communicate with parents and translate as needed depending on specific job requirements.
* Provide activities and instruction for students as planned by the teachers.
* Interpret teacher instructions and lessons.
* Work as part of the student's IEP team.
* Utilize language development activities to enrich student vocabulary.
* Assist with maintaining discipline.
* Assist students in other classes as necessary.
* Implement behavioral intervention strategies.
* Other duties as assigned by building principal and/or administrator.
Minimum Qualifications
* High School graduate, or GED.
* AA degree, or 48 semester credits or 72-quarter credits from an institution of higher education (level 100 class or higher), or having successfully passed the ETS ParaPro Assessment.
* Dependable, trustworthy, experience working with children and adults, good time manager, initiative.
* Physically able to occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
* Ability to walk, stand, sit, stoop, bend, reach, kneel, crawl, and grasp as required to successfully perform all duties and requirements.
* Ability to focus (adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus), clear vision at twenty (20) inches or less, and clear vision at twenty (20) feet or more.
* *Must pass Spanish proficiency test administered by OSD (oral and written)
