PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides American Sign Language (ASL) and/or Conceptually Accurate Signed English (CASE) interpretation for any school sponsored activities with students, staff and the school community for the purpose of facilitating communication using sign to voice and voice to sign. Assesses classroom, assembly hall, and other room setups for students, staff and school community (e.g. noise level, visibility, lighting, preferential seating, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper setup to facilitate effective communication using sign to voice and voice to sign. Responds to emergency situations (e.g. all emergency drills, injured student, fights, etc.) for the purpose of interpreting voice to sign and sign to voice to ensure effective communication is happening when safety concerns arise. Conducts meetings for the purpose of educating school district staff regarding the interpreter's role and the intricacies of facilitation of communication using sign to voice and voice to sign. Educates school community members and any individual regarding the Interpreter's role, this education is continuously provided. Confers with teaching staff for the purpose of conveying information and assisting the interpreting process to ensure the student understands the interpretation which is presented.     TITLE: Interpreter/Translator (Arabic, Chuukese, Somali, Hakha Chin) With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 51% Hispanic, 27% African American, 11% White, and 7% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,600 teachers. JOB GOAL: To provide interpreting and translating services to Arabic, Chuukese, Somali, or Hakha Chin speaking to families utilizing the highest standards of medical interpreting and translation to Arabic, Chuukese, Somali, or Haka Chin speaking families to ensure culturally and linguistically appropriate services. Examples of services would include FA Days, District Level Sponsored events, after hours Building Family and Literacy events. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Provide leadership to ensure culturally and linguistically appropriate services * Ability to communicate clearly and effectively through written and spoken language in English and Arabic, Chuukese, Somali, or Hakha Chin * Ability to work collaboratively with team members of other disciplines (e.g. SLP, OT, ECSE, SW, PT, Nurse) * Ability to work in partnership with parents/family members * Ability to apply new skills/information to existing practices * Ability to manage time efficiently to encompass activities in and out of the office * Ability to prioritize to meet deadlines * Ability to work in a variety of home and community settings QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree preferred, High School Diploma or GED considered with evidence of excellent language skills * Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken languages of Arabic, Chuukese, Somali, or Hakha Chin * Knowledge of Medical Interpreting, preferred REQUIREMENT: Must have a valid driver's license insurance coverage on vehicle COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION: Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Performs other related duties as assigned. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public. Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English. Demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken Arabic, Chuukese, Somali, or Hakha Chin.
