Job Description
Summary of Position: An effective SignLanguageInterpreter plays an integral role in the successful implementation of After School Matters programs. The SignLanguageInterpreter is responsible for facilitating communication in order to allow deaf & hard of hearing teens fully participate in After School Matters programs citywide.
This position does not guarantee a specific number of assigned hours. Assignments are based on the needs of teens as determined by the Disability Support Coordinator.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Interpret at the appropriate language level
Clearly convey all aspects of meaning and content
Make sure the program goals are clear
Facilitate and support participation and social communication
Monitor for comprehension
Interpret within programs and social settings, direct and overheard conversations, field trips and showcases
Maintain professional credentials
Qualifications:
IDHHC License Provisional (Red) or higher, OR current interpreter approval through ISBE
Cook County residency required.
Compensation: $32 / hour

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interprets classroom instruction for students with a hearing impairment and adapts classroom work under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing a method to support and/or reinforce lesson plans to assigned student/s.
Administers subject-specific tests and skill assessments under the guidance of a classroom teacher or resource teacher for the purpose of evaluating students' language ability and subject proficiency.
Administers, under supervision, first aid, and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g. tube feeding, toileting, diapering, etc.) for the purpose of providing required care for assigned students.
Assesses classroom, assembly hall, and other room setups for hearing impaired students (e.g. noise level, visibility, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper setup to facilitate hearing impaired students' learning.
Attends Individual Education Program meetings with assigned student(s) for the purpose of providing necessary input into the evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing/modifying students' objectives through the conversion of conversation to ASL.
Confers with teachers, parents, and/or appropriate community agency personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluating student progress and/or implementing student objectives.
Reverse-Interprets spoken words of hearing-impaired student(s) with limited speech for the purpose of facilitating classroom instruction of the hearing impaired student(s).
Translates verbal communication for the purpose of assisting students, teachers, and parents in communicating effectively between voice to sign and sign to voice.
Uses adapted classroom work/homework/assessment instruments under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing voice to sign and sign to voice support and/or reinforcing classroom objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
A high school diploma or GED
Experience:
One to three years of interpreting experience preferred.
Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
SignLanguageInterpreter Approval through ISBE:
ONE of the following:
Have completed 60 semester hours of college credit from one or more regionally accredited institutions of higher education
Hold an associate degree issued by a regionally accredited institution of higher education
Have achieved a passing score on the ParaPro test (offered by Educational Testing Service [ETS]) and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
Have achieved a passing score on the written examination administered by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
2. ONE of the following:
Attained a rating of Level 3.5 or above on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA)
Maintained a valid certification from the RID

Contract Responsibilities:
Provides consecutive, first-person interpretation.
Follows interpreter protocols and procedures as required by Propio L.S. clients.
Follows all Propio L.S. policies and procedures related to information confidentiality and interpreter ethics.
Continuously improves vocabulary and specialized subject matter knowledge, as required for various clients, such as medical, legal, social services, etc.
Requirements:
Submission of updated Resume in English at time of Application.
Completion of English Language Proficiency with a language rating of “technical proficiency” (3 or higher on the nationally recognized ILR scale).
Successful completion of a Mock oral interpretation session. Interpreters are evaluated against 24 quality standards and must attain a passing score.
Completion of Propio's online Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology Assessment, with a passing score.
A full Background Check and Security Screen.
A signed commitment to confidentiality, adherence to ethics, and HIPAA compliance.
Preferred Qualifications:

This position for a Part-Time Educational Interpreter will provide interpreter services to students 3-21 years that are deaf and/or hard of hearing. Placement at Thomas Metcalf School or University High School is dependent upon student need and can change from year to year.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Facilitate many kinds of face-to-face conversations for customers, settings may include emergency rooms, medical, legal, social services, and educational.
Effectively interpret between people who speak different languages, accurately repeating critical information from one person to another.
Perform translations that are grammatically and syntactically accurate.
Punctuality and attendance are expected; timeliness is necessary as it directly reflects on the agency as well as the interpreter. If an issue arises it is the interpreter's responsibility to inform the scheduling staff as soon as possible.
Interpreters are expected to work collaboratively with other internal or external interpreters.
As a representative of Hands Up Communications interpreters should exhibit professional behavior including attire, timeliness, attitude, manner, and overall behavior.
Interpreters are expected to adhere to ethical standards, procedures, and protocols specific to interpreting context (i.e. hospitals, courts, schools, etc.).
Confidentiality is required for all interpreting assignments unless specific circumstances arise that would cause the interpreter to violate the law.
