BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students.
* Evaluates student progress on a regular basis and prepares progress reports.
* Instructs pupils in citizenship, basic communications skills and other general elements of the course of study common to all teachers, as specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the district.
* Provides individual, small, and/or large group instruction, whenever appropriate, in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual and special abilities.
* Instructs pupils in proper care and use of textbooks, equipment and materials.
* Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide and orderly and productive environment.
* Selects and requisitions books, instructional materials, equipment, aids, and maintains required inventory records.
* Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction
* Develops and maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities.
* Supervises out-of classroom activities for pupils during the assigned working day, as required.
* Plans and coordinates the work of aides, teacher assistants, and other paraprofessionals.
* Identifies pupil's needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
* Communicates with parents and pupil personnel staff members on the individual pupil's progress and development.
* Maintains attendance accounting and business service as required.
* Develops and participates in the sponsorship of student activities and faculty committees.
* Acts as a resource person on an interdepartmental level to relate appropriate aspects of his/her subject area to other subject areas
* Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students.

Schedule: 21 hours per week
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Provide on-campus and field interpreting as required.
Provide instruction in American Sign Language and Pro-Tactile and/ or adaptation to accessible Communication to staff and students as assigned.
Provide communications training to assigned participants
Provide consumer education related to interpreting issues.
May be required to teach and interpret for selected staff/students and others, other than the regularly scheduled work period. If this occurs outside daytime hours, work hours will be adjusted accordingly.
Maintain daily progress notes on assigned students and submit regular written reports to supervisor.
Assist in the preparation of learning aids,
Participate in meetings to understand the unique issues of students and plan a team approach for solving these issues.
Shares responsibility for the equipment and general appearance of the work area.
Accompany and serve as a guide and/or interpreter for participants, professional staff members, and guests as assigned. Duties may require the use of a personal vehicle for travel to field sites, meetings, or events, including travel to Albany, NY, and Washington, D.C., for on-site interpretation.
Flexibility with work schedules, including some evening hours and overnight stays, is necessary to meet participants' and staff members' needs. Occasional travel may be required.
REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Required Bachelor's degree.
Required ITP (Interpreting Training Program- must have passed written RID test) RID/NAD NIC Knowledge test must have passed.
Two or three years of interpreting experience with individuals who are DeafBlind and/or deaf-visually impaired.
Must obtain RID/NAD NIC certification within 5 years of employment.
Proficiency in methods of communication utilized by individuals who are DeafBlind.
Some evening hours will be scheduled based upon students or staff needs and must be flexible with travel when needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Provide on-campus and field interpreting as required.

Provide communications training to assigned participants
Provide consumer education related to interpreting issues.

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Required Bachelor's degree.
Required ITP (Interpreting Training Program- must have passed written RID test) RID/NAD NIC Knowledge test must have passed.
Two or three years of interpreting experience with individuals who are DeafBlind and/or deaf-visually impaired.
Must obtain RID/NAD NIC certification within 5 years of employment.
Proficiency in methods of communication utilized by individuals who are DeafBlind.

Assists classroom teacher in the delivery of an effective instructional program
Work with individual hearing impaired students or small groups of hearing impaired student to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher
Guide independent study, enrichment work and remedial work assigned by the teacher to the student(s) with hearing loss.
Model social strategies to encourage interaction between individuals who use sign language and those who do not.
For those with the appropriate certification, performs oral interpretation; present spoken messages utilizing easily read, clear mouth movements, orally repeat the spoken message of the Deaf or hard of hearing individual to the hearing individual, if necessary
Interpret for individual or small groups of students and staff members with auditory disabilities in the classroom, field trips or at assembly programs
Assist the teacher of the deaf and supervisor of the auditory impairments program in exploring and identifying the communication needs of students with hearing loss
Provide assistance to the instructional leader in the appropriate use and care of classroom amplification systems which allow auditory access to those students capable of using residual hearing
Report the malfunction/inappropriate use of such equipment to the appropriate professionals for repair/reinstruction pertaining to said equipment
Assist students with hearing loss to master the use of amplification technology (personal hearing aids, personal & classroom assistive listening devices) and to independently advocate for the appropriate use of classroom accommodations
Assist with the supervision of deaf and hard of hearing students during emergency drills, assemblies and field trips
Read and adhere to the Registry of interpreter for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and agencies associated with the school
