REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Qualifications and Physical Demands
Education and Experience:
Level I - Entry level of a series. Beginning proficiency in sign language (American Sign Language and/or Signed English). Able to interpret non-complex, non-technical subject matter independently on a limited basis as determined by the Director or recognized evaluator; assists in the advancement of skill level and proficiency of services provided to deaf and hard of hearing students. Possession of the following certifications or equivalent certification from the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), Registry Interpreters of the Deaf (RID), or National Association of the Deaf (NAD): Interpreting Training Program (ITP) Certification, Educational Interpreters Proficiency Assessment (EIPA).
Level II - Mid level of a series. Intermediate level classification of the Interpreter series. Intermediate proficiency in sign language (ASL and/or Signed English. The Interpreter II will interpret moderately complex, technical subject matter and is able to understand course content in major areas of study and works independently in select courses. Assist in the advancement of skill level or as deemed necessary by the Director. Assignments require a thorough understanding of educational principles, techniques and practices related to interpreter services. Possession of the following certifications or equivalent certification from the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), Registry Interpreters of the Deaf (RID), or National Association of the Deaf (NAD): Interpreting Training Program (ITP) Certification, Educational Interpreters Proficiency Assessment (EIPA).
Level III - Advanced level of a series. Fluency in both interpreting and transliterating in multiple classroom settings with varying degrees of difficulty or other campus venues. Proficient in voice interpreting skills and is able to provide advanced level of understanding of course content across college curriculum. Demonstrates conceptual understanding of the issues and problems specific to deafness in education. Assignments are more complex interpreter assignments. Possession of the following certifications or equivalent certification from the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), Registry Interpreters of the Deaf (RID), or National Association of the Deaf (NAD): Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Interpreting, Training Program (ITP) Certification, Educational Interpreters Proficiency Assessment (EIPA), National Interpreter Certification.
Level IV - Expert skill level in providing interpreting and transliterating services to the deaf and hard of hearing student population in all possible interpreting situations on a college campus or campus events. Possesses the ability to assess and accommodate the deaf and hard of hearing students' communication needs and facilitates communication across the college curriculum and related venues. Advocates for student access and possesses a working knowledge of state and federal laws related to deaf students in the post-secondary environment. Conditions of Employment
This is a professional expert position. The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based upon available funds. The effective dates of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

Sign Language Interpreters are assigned some combination of the following duties:
* Perform effective sign language interpreting and transliterating services for students, faculty and staff according to accepted American Sign Language/English interpreting procedures.

* Serve as an interpreter at various campus events including department meetings, student orientations, professional development activities, counseling appointments, placement procedures, field trips, theatrical productions and other extracurricular activities.

* Serve as a liaison between the deaf and hearing impaired students, school faculty and staff; explain the needs and concerns of students.

* Video Remote interpreting may be required depending on the structure of the course or event.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* Sign Language Interpreter I: High school graduate or equivalent, graduated from interpreter training program and combination of two (2) years' experience. OR
* Sign Language Interpreter II: High school graduate or equivalent, graduated from interpreter training program and combination of three (3) years' experience and shall provide proof of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) in process.OR
* Sign Language Interpreter III: High school graduate or equivalent graduated from interpreter training program and combination of more than five (5+) years' experience, and shall possess Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification. AND

* In-depth knowledge of Deaf culture and the implications in the post-secondary educational setting is required.

Requires a minimum of two (2) years working as a level IV interpreter or equivalent in higher education.
* The incumbent must demonstrate highest fluency in ASL and other student/faculty preferred signing modalities as needed. High degree of competence in simultaneous, consecutive, receptive, and expressive interpreting. Fluency with the ability to facilitate communication across the college curriculum and other related venues both on and off campus.
* A high level of understanding of course content across the college curriculum to interpret specialized subject matter terminology, including but not limited to, medical, scientific, vocational, trades, etc.
* Ability to mentor interpreters in skill and professional development.
* Ability to work effectively in technical, sensitive, and high-profile settings with Deaf students and/or Deaf faculty including: high level coursework, appointments, presentations, interactions with deans/administrators, platform interpreting, etc., as determined by the supervising department (DSPS and/or HR).
* The incumbent will be required to complete in-house evaluation process scoring all 5's.
