Description
The ASL Interpreter reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine (NM), adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
Responsibilities:
* Conducts medical and general interpreting for patients and their families, physicians, and the healthcare team in accordance with the National Standards of Practice of NCIHC designed to facilitate the language needs at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
* Assesses and monitors patients' understanding of information conveyed, and serves as a cultural mediator.
* Records and monitors interpretation activities according to department standards.
* Makes decisions regarding prioritization of multiple requests received at one time.
* Medical Interpreting:
* Provides medical and general interpreting services to patients, family members, support persons and healthcare providers and other staff in accordance with the National Standards of Practice (NCIHC). This includes interpreting during consultations and diagnostic testing; medical procedures and operations; the consent process and educational forums. Ensures that the patient's and family's needs are communicated to healthcare providers and staff.
* Screens multiple requests for interpreters and prioritizes requests based on urgency of need.
* Assists the healthcare team in problem solving and complaint resolution related to the limited English-Proficient population.
* Participates in ongoing professional development to maintain practice in accordance with professional medical interpreting standards.
* Communication and Collaboration:
* Initiates and develops positive relationships with patients, visitors, healthcare providers, fellow interpreters and staff, exhibiting respect, flexibility and cooperation at all times.
* Serves as a cultural mediator, as necessary and when appropriate, to enhance communication between American culture staff and native culture patients/families, as it relates to medical care.
* Supports and participates in the continuous assessment and improvement of the interpretation services program.
* Assists with other departmental functions as assigned
* Actively participates in staff meetings and mandatory in-services.
* Documentation:
* Maintains documentation of all interpretation encounters, to include relevant data such as location, duration, and purpose. Documents all interpreting encounters accurately and completely, including patient refusals of interpreting services.
* Maintains accurate records of productivity, work volumes, and interpreting requests.

* Proven software competencies (Excel, Word)

Qualifications
Required:
* Must hold a certification from the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission with at least an Advanced or Master license from the state.
* A Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf certification completion substantiating formal training and qualifications for medical interpreting.
* Completion of high school education or equivalent.
* Minimum of two years' experience in providing medical interpreting in an acute care setting.
* High level of fluency in English.
* Ability to interpret effectively, accurately, and impartially both receptive and expressive, using medical terminology as appropriate.
* Ability to maintain professional demeanor in all situations.
* Knowledgeable about the issues of cultural competency and healthcare disparities. Adaptable and sensitive in cross-cultural situations.

Provide interpreting and/or transliterating services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, in student's modality, in the school setting.
Participate in educational team activities either in person or via a report. Activities may include team meeting, Individualized Education Program (IEP) conference and/or informal staffings. Input from the interpreter may involve information regarding communication strategies and progress related to the child's use of the interpreter.
Serve as a liaison between the students who are deaf or hard of hearing, hearing peers, staff and faculty members.
Consult and communicate with TOD and assist in providing in-services to hearing students, staff and parents as requested in regard to sign language, deafness, Deaf culture, interpreting and consumer education.
Provide interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom, extracurricular activities and parent meetings when requested in advance.
Perform other duties assigned by the principal when this does not conflict with the primary responsibility of interpreting.
At times, when it does not interfere with their service as interpreters, educational interpreters may be asked to assist the teacher with some of the more routine classroom duties.
Use any scheduled preparation time to preview materials, conference with teachers, record data in logs, research signs, etc.

SUMMARY:
Provide ASL interpreting services for any and all persons or groups, as scheduled, including interpreting for both internal and external customers. Work to ensure customer satisfaction through successful completion of interpreter assignments. Represent the agency in a professional manner at all times.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Maintain strong relationship with customers, including education on the field by explaining policies and procedures, the demands of the interpreting job and the roles and responsibilities of an interpreter.
Manage schedule/assignments in a productive manner. Assigned to emergency work, as needed.
Act as Mentor to students and other interpreters.
Act as liaison to Customers including education on the field by explaining policies and procedures, the demands of the interpreting job, and the roles and responsibilities of an interpreter. Relay feedback received from customers, regarding operation of the department, to Director.
Act as liaison to Interpreters including education on policies and procedures, educational opportunities, and agency events. Relay feedback received from interpreters, regarding operation of the department, to Director.
Assist in attracting new business customers and interpreters by recommending CHS Interpreter Services.
Provide office support, and other duties as assigned, such as providing presentations or workshops, and coordinate projects when applicable.
Manage and report monthly approved expenses to management on time.
REQUIREMENTS:
Fluency in both American Sign Language and English with superior sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign language skills.
Advanced/Master license by the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission.
Approved medical clearance.
3 + years of related professional interpreting experience, including VRI services, with strong demonstrated experience interpreting in all areas of business/environments.
Must maintain certification status by completing continuing education units as required by state or national certification.
Must possess valid driver's license and have access to operational vehicle to travel independently in the Chicago metropolitan area and collar counties.
Strong problem solving, time management and priority setting skills.

Flexibility in work schedule including weekends and evenings.
