Essential Functions
Proactively responds to requests for language access in a healthcare setting. This includes but is not limited to: In-person interpreting, telephone interpreting, video interpreting, basic translation.

An employee in this class is responsible for transliterating/interpreting in the classroom or at school-related activities for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Daily directions are provided by the general education teacher and/or the teacher of the deaf. The employee consults with the teachers when problems arise. Errors can seriously inhibit the progress of student learning. Limited supervision is provided.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Competence in the communication modality used by the student who is deaf or hard of hearing.
Competence in English grammar, including syntax, spelling and punctuation.
Working knowledge of typical language development.
Strong interpersonal skills in relating to students and adults.
Working knowledge of subjects being interpreted.
Understanding of deafness and its impact on language development.
Skill in expressive transliterating/interpreting at a rate commensurate with conversational speech and class lectures.
Adequate reverse interpreting/transliterating skill while maintaining the integrity of the message.
Ability to work as part of an Individualized Education Program team.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

Job Summary
A Spoken Language Interpreter is an employee of Lexington Medical Center who facilitates communication of spoken messages between LEP patients and visitors and LMC staff and providers. An interpreter combines the ability to facilitate understanding with both cultural and linguistic barriers while adhering to the role of the interpreter. Principal Responsibilities:
* Performs medical interpretation/translation for patients and their families, including in-group settings such as family conferences.
* Makes notations in the patient's chart indicating the origin of the request for interpretation or translation, the nature of the service provided (such as interpreting treatment orders, pharmacy instructions) and an assessment of the patient's understanding and level of acceptance of the information. Ensures the above occurs accurately and consistently with all staff under the direction of the ISC.
* Translates correspondence, medical histories, medical consent forms, medical procedures and instructions, legal documents, manuals, brochures, and other pertinent documents as necessary.
* Assesses patient's/family's comprehension of "informed consent" as needed. Advises physician/patient care staff of any need for clarification.
* Ensures access to community resources for non-English speaking patients and their families.
* Participate in monthly medical interpreter meetings.

* Works with management to ensure ADA and national interpreter standards are met and complied with.
