The interpreter facilitates effective communication between the student, teachers, peers, and staff using American Sign Language and spoken English, ensuring full access to classroom instruction and school activities. This position is part-time, approximately 2 hours per day during the school year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Provide accurate, impartial, and age-appropriate interpretation of classroom instruction, discussions, and related school communications between English and ASL.
* Support the student's educational access by interpreting for core academic classes, small-group activities, or other school events as outlined in the student's IEP.
* Collaborate regularly with the classroom teacher, special education staff, and other support providers to align interpreting services with instructional goals.
* Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality, following the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct and Connecticut regulations.
* Prepare in advance by reviewing lesson materials, vocabulary, and relevant content when possible.
* Communicate with the special education case manager or administrator regarding any concerns about the student's access, communication needs, or classroom environment.
* Participate in IEP meetings or student support meetings as needed.
* Maintain annual state registration with the Connecticut Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) in accordance with C.G.S. §46a-33a.
Qualifications:
* High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in interpreting, deaf studies, or related field preferred.
* Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
* Current registration as an interpreter with the Connecticut Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS), as required by C.G.S. §17a-838 and §46a-33a.
* Holds recognized national or state interpreter credentials acceptable to the Interpreting Standards Board (e.g., RID, NAD, EIPA 3.5+, or equivalent).
* Prior experience interpreting in educational settings preferred.
* Knowledge of deaf culture and sensitivity to the communication and developmental needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Other Key responsibilities:

Traveling to individual's homes or locations in the community on occasion to interpret between hearing staff and Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing individuals served.

Providing education to trainers and meeting leaders regarding providing a deaf-friendly atmosphere at the beginning of each training or meeting.
Qualifications
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent, required.
Current National Interpreter Certification (NIC) from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and 2 years of ASL interpreting, required.
Valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record, required.

SCOPE OF DUTIES
Reporting to the Supervisor of ASD Interpreting, the Staff Interpreter will be assigned to a variety of work and interpreting situations. Primary Duties
Provide communication access for the Deaf Community on campus and statewide by using formative linguistic, cultural, and life experiences.

5) Attends at least 9 monthly Interpreter & Translation Services staff meetings each year. Attends a minimum of 10 hours of a medical interpreter or related training during the first 12 months after hire and works toward national certification. Studies medical terminology in English and target language continuously.

5) Within 18 months of hire, must obtain the highest level of national certification for the individual's language pair as a healthcare/medical interpreter from either national organization providing testing, and fulfills continuing education unit (CEU) requirements to maintain it
