St Benedicts College company history timeline
The monastery traces its beginning to 1857, when four young nuns and two monastic candidates made the treacherous journey from Pennsylvania to the Minnesota frontier.
In 1915 Sister Magna Wirth joined the staff.
The International Relations Club introduced in the early 1930’s at the invitation of the Carnegie Peace Foundation continues to draw the more politically minded students.
With the appointment of Sister Claire Lynch as dean in 1932 the college entered on a new program—that of throwing off its dependence on one local accrediting agency and of seeking membership in the North Central Association of Colleges.
In 1937 the department was not only reinstated but ten quarter hours of philosophy were required of all students.
They survived hunger and the Midwest’s harsh climate to create what became, at its peak, the largest community of Benedictine women in the world, numbering more than 1,200 in 1947.
Since 1952, Ardeleons of St Benedict’s and the Johnny Players of St John’s have collaborated in such plays as Christopher Fry’s The Lady’s Not for Burning, Moliere’s The Miser, Claudel’s The Tidings Brought to Mary, as well as in several by Shakespeare.
Saint Benedict's College was opened in 1955 under the name 'Blessed John Almond' in recognition of local martyr John Almond who was an Allerton resident.
Today, the College of Saint Benedict is the nation’s only Benedictine college for women and a 2012 recipient of the prestigious Senator Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization.
