This is a 12-month tenure-accruing position that will be 30% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) and 70% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station), available in the Mid-Florida Research and Education Center, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Tenure will accrue in the Department of Horticultural Sciences. The faculty member will seek contract and grant funding actively to support their program. The faculty member will engage in Extension activities in their program area.
Expected Duties
This position aims to develop a nationally recognized, extramurally funded research and teaching program in urban horticulture that will advance urban horticulture systems by working in collaboration with faculty, graduate students, government agencies, industry representatives, botanical gardens, and non-profit organizations in Florida. These systems aim to enhance food security and respond to the impacts of environmental, socioeconomic, and other challenges.
Utilizing their expertise, collegiality, and stakeholder-focused approach, the successful candidate will demonstrate leadership and support collaborative efforts to strengthen horticultural food production systems that are scaled appropriately and improve the quality of life in urban environments and communities. The successful candidate is expected to develop sustainable alternatives to current industry production practices with a focus on using management practices that will enhance the horticulture industry by improving productivity, profitability, and stewardship of natural resources.
Programmatic goals within this process could include: 1) identification and evaluation of crops and cultivars best suited to the environmental conditions of urban environments; 2) investigating production system diversification, including the incorporation of perennial crops and new cropping system designs that incorporate sustainable intensification principles; 3) investigating water reuse and conservation practices specific to urban agricultural operations, promoting effective water management; 4) developing production practices and techniques to enhance the nutritional value of food as medicine in urban production systems; 5) evaluating environmental and growth impacts of enhanced efficiency fertilizers, compost, and other organic production techniques on specialty crops in Florida; 6) identifying production approaches and best management practices suitable for urban farms to improve crop production system efficiency, economic opportunity, and resilience.
The successful candidate will also be expected to develop a teaching program that enhances urban food production and urban horticultural practices. The candidate would be expected to develop courses pertaining to urban agriculture production, horticultural cropping systems, and support teaching needs of the unit by teaching laboratory courses in plant science as needed by MREC undergraduate and graduate students.
The successful candidate will engage in scholarly activities related to instruction, including teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, participating in curriculum revision and enhancement, seeking funding for the teaching program, supervising undergraduate and graduate research and creative work, publishing teaching-related scholarship, producing learning tools, and engaging in professional development activities related to teaching and advising. Faculty are encouraged to support and participate in the CALS Honors Program, distance education, and international education.

Required Qualifications:
An earned doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in horticulture or plant science, agronomy or soil science, sustainable agriculture, agroecology or a closely related discipline is required. Broad understanding and experience in ecologically based urban horticulture is required, along with having the potential for excellence in teaching. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to UF core values.
Preferred:
Preference will be given to candidates familiar with the economic, environmental, and social sustainability drivers of urban, space-intensive production systems and their contributions to individual and community well-being and resilience. This includes adaptation to stress, economic-market forces, and provision of agroecosystem services. Candidates who can bridge horticultural food production with other sciences to strengthen urban food systems and communities are especially desired. Experience in technology, agricultural engineering, or development of decision support tools are highly desirable.

The successful candidate will develop an extramurally funded, nationally-recognized research and extension program emphasizing breeding of specialty and ornamental crops. The program will use both traditional and advanced methods for improving quality traits, abiotic and biotic stress (disease/insect) resistance and improving aesthetic quality of crops through consumer-friendly precision breeding and/or other similar genetic techniques. The program will focus on developing specialty crops that can be grown in greenhouse or other types of protected culture. As appropriate, the incumbent may also work on fruit crops as well. This faculty member will integrate into the existing genetic program emphasizing precision breeding and environmental crop tissue and cell culture programs and be expected to work in partnership with other inter- and intradepartmental faculty members as well as lead industry groups to develop a competitive research program. The incumbent is expected to collaborate with horticulturists, entomologists, plant pathologists, geneticists and plant breeders, to develop horticulturally desirable end-products for consumers.
The incumbent will also be expected to obtain extramurally funding to support the breeding program and graduate students. This faculty member will participate in UF/IFAS Extension programming through the development and teaching of extension materials for outreach to Florida stakeholders. Tenure will accrue in the Department of Horticultural Sciences. The successful candidate will participate actively in graduate education by chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, and publishing research results with students. The faculty member will actively seek contract and grant funding to support his/her program. Involvement in national and international professional societies is expected.

Background Information:
The UF/IFAS Mid-Florida Research and Education Center (MREC) in Apopka, Florida is one of 12 University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Research and Education Centers. Located in the heart of Florida (just north or Orlando), the MREC is a center for research, teaching, and extension programs. Originally established as the Central Florida Research & Education Center (CFREC) in the fall of 1986 by administratively combining research centers at Apopka, Leesburg, and Sanford, a new research and education facility was constructed on land next to the old Apopka center in 2005. Today, UF/IFAS MREC serves a large ornamental, nursery and agricultural industry which has historically cooperated with the Center to develop applied research. MREC's unique 218-acre facility includes two controlled environment facilities, over 130,000 square feet of greenhouses, 20,000 square feet of laboratories, two instructional pest management facilities, and a graduate student dormitory.
The Horticultural Sciences Department at the University of Florida has a variety of research, teaching, and extension programs located at the Gainesville campus and across the state at research and education centers. Program focus areas within the department include: Plant Physiology and Biochemistry; Plant Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology; Crop Production and Management; Postharvest Biology and Technology; Organic and Sustainable Horticulture; and Weed Science. This position requires a Ph.D. (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Genetics, Plant Breeding, Plant Biology, Horticultural Science or a closely related field. Additionally, the candidate must have a strong record of publishing in refereed journals. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding. The Opportunity
The School of Graduate Studies in the College of Aviation at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a strong preference for candidates with a background and expertise in space operations and autonomous systems.
The School of Graduate Studies offers an MS in Aviation with specializations in Aviation Safety, Uncrewed Systems, and Space Operations. It also offers an MS in Occupational Safety Management, an MS in Uncrewed Systems, and an MS in Space Operations in a traditional on-campus format, as well as an online Ph.D. in Aviation with specializations in Aviation Safety, Aviation Human Factors, Aviation Operations, and Intradisciplinary.
The candidate will be expected to teach courses at both the doctoral and master's levels and chair Ph.D. dissertation and/or master's thesis committees. The typical teaching load is 2 to 3 courses per semester.
The successful candidate will transition to the role of Program Coordinator for the MS in Space Operations over time. Reporting to the Associate Dean for School of Graduate Studies, the candidate will provide oversight, direction, and guidance to ensure the quality, integrity, and relevance of the program in order to meet the mission and goals of the School, the College, and the University.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, the candidate is required to meet ongoing scholarly growth requirements, which include publishing scholarly work, actively pursuing and obtaining externally funded research, and presenting work at professional conferences. The candidate will also be expected to fulfill service responsibilities to the university and the profession. This faculty position will be located on the Daytona Beach campus. The candidate is required to provide instruction in both traditional classroom formats and online formats as appropriate.

Required Education and Qualifications:

Possess a valid FAA Airframe and Powerplant Certificate
Experience in aviation maintenance sciences: civil, military, corporate, general aviation, manufacturer, aerospace, or airline.

Student centered regarding long term aviation and aerospace career development and support of extracurricular activities.
Develop innovative curriculum commensurate with the high standards of the department and University.
