How long does a USPS background check take?

By Zippia Team - Aug. 22, 2022

A background check for USPS typically takes five days but can take up to 30 days.

If you pass the interview round, you will be asked to submit a federal background check going back five years. This check will verify your employment history, criminal history, and driving history. Usually, any misdemeanors or felonies in the last three years will be a disqualification.

For positions that require driving, automatic disqualifiers include:

  • Less than two years of proven driving record

  • Driving permit suspended at least once in three years or at least twice in five years

  • Driving permit revoked at least once in the last five years

  • Reckless driving violation at least once in the last three years or twice in the last five years

  • DUI at any time

  • Any other traffic violations at least three in three years or at least five in five years

  • At-fault accidents at least twice in three or five years

  • Any at-fault accident that resulted in a fatality

  • Any hit-and-run offense
