How long does it take to become a registered dietitian?
It takes 4 to 6 years to become a registered dietitian. The exact time it takes largely depends on your educational path and the state in which you are becoming a registered dietitian.
Not only are there educational requirements involved, but there is also a certification and required exam. Plus, depending on the state, there can be additional certifications needed.
The most common path is to earn a bachelor's degree (4 years), then complete an internship (1 to 2 years), complete the CDR exam(1 to 6 months), and any extra time on the Coordinated Program and obtain a license in your state if applicable.

Next, you will need to complete a one-to-two-year dietitian internship. The reason for this is that to become a registered dietitian, you must obtain 1,200 hours of hands-on clinical experience through an internship after completing your nutrition program to become a registered dietician.
Once you have completed your degree and internship requirements, you can become validated by the CDR and take the registered dietitian exam. Passing the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) exam is crucial for earning the RD credential and becoming a registered dietitian.
Finally, most states require a specific license to practice there, separate from the CDR exam.
