How long does it take to become a technical analyst?

It typically takes a bachelor's degree and three to five years of experience to become a technical analyst. A bachelor's degree is the primary educational pathway because most technical analyst roles require a degree in information technology, computer science, business administration, or other related programs.

Many industries employ technical analysts, including banks, investment firms, financial corporations, health care facilities, and insurance companies. An entry-level information technology position is typically needed to pursue the position of a technical analyst.

This is typically held for about three years before a person has the amount of knowledge, skills, and experience to perform the role of a technical analyst. This entry-level job typically involves assisting technical analysts with application or software development and maintenance and designing solutions to technical problems.

In addition to the time it takes to become a technical analyst, there is also a licensing requirement for most technical analysts. The main body tasked with issuing licenses to market technicians is the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).

For a technician to receive the FINRA license, they must be sponsored by the firm that employs them. Apart from FINRA, technical analysts may also receive market certification from other professional bodies such as the CFA Institute.
