How long does it take to become an editor?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 17, 2021

It takes around 4 to 6 years to become an editor. There is no one particular path towards becoming an editor. Nor are there any certification or licensure requirements to work as an editor.

It takes most applicants around four years to earn a bachelor's degree. Those who pursue graduate publishing or editing degrees or certificates will take another 1 or 2 years to complete their education.

Alternatively, you build your skills as a writer and editor while bulking your work portfolio. This path also takes several years of writing experience and networking to be considered for an editor position.

In addition, you should also brush up on your computer skills. Familiarity with electronic publishing, graphics, Web design, social media, and multimedia production is also important because more content is offered online.
