How long does it take to become director of product management?
It takes about five to ten years of work experience to become director of product management. The time it takes to become director of project management is dependent on several factors, including your education level and the field or industry that you're working in.
To become a director of product management, you will need to first start out as an associate product manager. This is an entry-level position, which usually requires a four-year bachelor's or six-year master's degree.
After one to three years, an associate product manager will typically be promoted to product manager. After about three to five years, a product manager may move on to senior product manager.
A senior product manager may work for another three to five years, sometimes longer, before making it to the director of product. After the director of product management comes the VP of Product and the Chief Product Officer, and beyond.
Some smaller organizations may hire directors of product managers with just five-plus years of product management experience. In other cases, someone with an MBA may progress more quickly into a director position compared to someone with just a bachelor's degree.
