How long does it take to become project manager?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 10, 2022

It takes six to eight years to become a project manager, on average. This includes the time that it takes to earn a bachelor's degree and the time needed to gain project management experience. That's not to say that a bachelor's degree is a requirement. A candidate without one may take seven to ten years to reach the project manager position.

The most common path for a project manager is to earn a degree in business management, although some universities have specialized programs in project management. In other cases, depending on the field, a prospective project manager will need a field-related degree with a possible minor in business.

For example, an engineer project manager almost always starts off as an engineer because having practical industry experience can be very important depending on the role.

The two paths toward becoming certified as a project manager:

  • Option 1:

    • Four-year degree from a college or a university.

    • 36 months spent leading projects. These projects must have been completed successfully. They must have a minimum team size of five or more.

    • 35 hours of training in project management or a CAPM certification.

  • Option 2:

    • A high school diploma.

    • 60 months spent leading projects. These projects must have been completed successfully. They must have a minimum team size of five or more. There should not be any kind of complication or failure in the course of completing the project.

    • 35 hours of training in project management or a CAPM certification

    • One can fulfill this requirement in an easy manner by taking a PMP certification course. This is because 35 hours of contact training in project management are included in PMP certification training online.
