How to get a job in a hospital with no experience

By Zippia Team - Jul. 31, 2023

There are many ways to get a job in a hospital with no experience:

  • Determine what kind of job you want. There are so many different roles in a hospital. Most people instantly think of doctors and nurses, but there are a whole host of other employees that keep a hospital running efficiently.

If you want a higher-level role in a hospital, you have to attend an adequate amount of schooling, with a focus on nursing, medicine, or hospital administration. There is no way around this, and it is the only way to obtain positions such as a nurse, doctor, and hospital manager.

All of these high-level options require many years of education and training. These are also competitive fields, so if you are looking to acquire a high-level job in a hospital, be prepared to work extremely hard.

Putting aside jobs people usually think of in the hospital context, there are still so many more opportunities. Hospitals need clerks, receptionists, medical assistant, janitors, cafeteria and gift shop staff, security, and many other types of employees.

Try to determine what best suits you in terms of your aspirations and skills. Some of these lower-level positions may require education or training, while others won't.

  • Create a resume with transferable skills. Even if you have no experience in a hospital or healthcare in general, you probably have work experience under your belt that contains transferable skills.

Again, this depends on what type of role you want to get in a hospital, but skills like customer service, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, basic math, leadership qualities, communication, and many others, are applicable to most hospital positions.

Also, if your work experience is directly related. For instance, you may have never worked in a hospital, but you have experience as a maid, this would open you up to certain cleaning positions in the hospital setting.

The same goes for jobs like hospital security, if you've ever been a security guard, or hospital cafeteria roles, if you have ever worked in the food service industry.

Look at your work experience and figure out if you are perfectly suited for a specific hospital position or have skills that speak to a certain role.

Once you have considered all of this, tailor your resume according to the hospital job you want.
