What are employee relations skills?
Employee relations skills include a mixture of hard and soft skills focused on fostering positive work relationships and minimizing destructive interpersonal issues. Hard skills such as knowledge of employment law and soft skills such as interpersonal and negotiating abilities are all required in this role.
Employee relations professionals must ensure that a company complies with employment laws, such as those that relate to discrimination and disabilities. They must be knowledgeable about the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and affirmative action laws, to name a few.
To be effective on the job, employee relations specialists must possess a variety of competencies and strengths, including superior negotiation, communication, interpersonal and analytical skills. For example, having strong interpersonal skills is needed to resolve conflicts successfully.
Being in employee relations means having to use your communication abilities to ensure efficient flow of information throughout the company - from the office cleaners to middle management to the top executives.
To accomplish this, someone in employee relations must also be able to work with a diverse population to ease tensions between employers and employees and find effective solutions. They must be a good listener who can see both sides of a conflict and come up with a mutually beneficial solution.
