What degree do you need to be a chaplain?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

You need a bachelor's degree in divinity or religious studies to be a chaplain. However, many institutions are starting to insist on a master's degree.

A chaplain is required to obtain a degree in divinity or religious studies. They should be familiar with the Bible, as well as other religious texts. They typically serve people of many different faiths who are unable to attend regular service. Part of your education should include experience through internship or volunteering, possibly in the secular area you wish to serve. Furthering your education should possibly include biblical counseling.

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is a training that is often required. CPE training involves chaplains of different faiths taking time to share experiences and knowledge. Some organizations will also require you to be ordained.

You may also need to get a certification that is recognized by the Association of Professional Chaplains. This involves completing a written test, along with all of your other education requirements. Finally, a residency may be required before you are set out independently.
