This question is about healthcare consultant education.
You need a bachelor's degree in business, nursing, or healthcare to become a healthcare consultant. Some companies, however, prefer an individual with a master's degree.
Healthcare consultants must have an understanding of both the business and the healthcare industry. Although a bachelor's degree is the minimum requirement, often a master's degree in business or health administration is what gives the specialized knowledge required. Part of this education prepares you to keep up with healthcare, best practices, and government regulations.
Although it's not required, many healthcare consultants obtain certifications to distinguish themselves and stand out. The National Society of Certified Healthcare Business Consultants (NSCHBC) offers a certification in which the candidate is required to pass a four-hour exam. They must complete 50 hours of continuing education every two years to renew it.
The Institute of Management Consultants (IMC), while not specific to healthcare, offers a Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation. To obtain this certification, a candidate must have three years of experience, a four-year degree, at least five client evaluations, and a written summary of engagements.
The candidate can then attempt to pass both a written and oral exam. Recertification every three years involves 30 hours of continuing education.
Healthcare consulting is a rapidly growing industry. It is essential to get the necessary degree to prepare yourself. This will give you the general and specialized knowledge necessary to work fluidly with all of your clients in an ever-changing industry.
