What degree do you need to be a mechanical engineer?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 15, 2022

You typically need a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or mathematics to be a mechanical engineer. Sub-related fields of engineering may be acceptable as they tend to have overlapping competencies and training. Other subfields that may be acceptable include alternative energy and remanufacturing.

Mechanical engineers need at least a bachelor's degree. In addition, students are advised to seek out programs accredited by entities recognized by the United States Department of Education's Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) including the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

A master's degree is not required, but it can lead to more significant opportunities concerning breakthrough innovations, coveted research grants, and leadership positions. According to CareerOneStop, 22% of people working as mechanical engineers had a master's degree in 2021 compared with 54% with a bachelor's degree.

A graduate of a mechanical engineering program can also seek out a Professional Engineering (PE) license after they have gained at least 4 years of experience in the field. A PE license can indicate a high level of competence to clients, supervisors, and colleagues.

To obtain a PE licensure you must:

  • Take the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

  • Take the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam

The Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam is 8 hours and is the last step in completing licensure. It is available in several different fields:

  • Mechanical engineering

  • HVAC and refrigeration

  • Machine design and materials

  • Thermal and fluids systems

Numerous organizations also offer mechanical engineering certifications that can be used to build confidence and boost credibility. These include:

  • ASME

  • Associated Air Balance Council

  • Association for Facilities Engineering

  • Association of Certified Fraud Examiners

  • Green Building Certification Institute

  • National Fire Prevention Association
