What degree do you need to be a technical writer?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

You need a minimum of an associate's degree to work as a technical writer. Most writers in this field have four degrees and specialize in one area of the technical writing profession.

While you can work in the field with a two-year degree, it is suggested that anyone wishing to become a technical writer obtain a bachelor's degree in technical communication, scientific writing, or journalism.

These majors will ensure that you have the writing background to work successfully as a technical writer. It is also important to focus on one of the many branches of technical writing.

There are some branches of technical writing that you can focus on while in college. Medical writing requires knowledge of medical terms and procedures, and manual writing can benefit from a knowledge of engineering or technology.

Both the Society for Technical Education and the American Medical Writers Association offers continued education and certifications that will enhance a candidate's employability. Some technical writers join other professional associations to gain knowledge and up-to-date insight related to their specialized fields.
