What education do you need to be an event planner?

By Zippia Team - Jan. 22, 2022

There is no specific education you need to be an event planner. However, an associate's or bachelor's degree and relevant certification are highly favored.

Most event planners have a college degree, and this is highly favored by those looking to hire someone to plan their event. It is possible to work as an event planner with just an associate's degree, and 14% of all event planners have only their associate's degree.

However, the most common degree for event planners is a bachelor's degree, with 70% of all event planners having their bachelor's degree. Graduate degrees are less common in this career, with only 6% having their master's degree.

Education is not a significant predictor of event planner pay. In fact, event planners with their master's degrees average less than $5,000 more annually than those with only a high-school diploma or equivalent.

The most common majors for event planners are:

  • Business: 22%

  • Communication: 14%

  • Marketing: 8%

  • Psychology: 7%

  • Hospitality Management: 7%
