The differences between a dietitian and a registered dietitian lie in the legal restrictions that each title carries. A dietitian who is not registered is known as a nutritionist.

To become a registered dietitian, dietitians must:
Complete a baccalaureate degree from an ACEND-approved program
Complete an ACEND-approved supervised clinical program
Successfully pass the CDR registration examination
Complete continuing professional education credits needed to maintain registration
Depending on the state, there may be an additional state license exam and fee that requires routine recertification
