What is the job description of a patient care coordinator?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 10, 2022

A job description of a patient care coordinator describes someone who helps patients get the services they need. Patient care coordinators are usually the first person patients, and their families see when entering a medical facility or hospital. This means that they need to be easily recognizable and look professional.

A patient representative helps patients get the services they need, understand their health insurance policy, and help patients make more informed healthcare decisions. Their position is critical in advocating for the best services and lowest costs for patients.

While not a nurse or other functional healthcare worker, some hospitals will require them to wear scrubs so that patients and their families will take their role as advocates and knowledgeable representatives seriously.

Because this role requires an in-depth understanding of the healthcare system and the ability to explain diagnoses and treatments, a significant background in the medical industry is needed. This is also why more often than not, a bachelor's or associate's degree in a health-related discipline is required for successful candidates in this role.

While not required, there are two certifications that every patient access representative should pursue. These are the Board Certified Patient Advocate (BCPA) and Professional Patient Advocate Certificate Training Program (PPAC).

The BCPA is a certification that is designed to assure the public that the patient advocate has the standards and competencies to succeed in the role. The PPAC, which is offered by the Professional Patient Advocate Institute, is a program aimed at introducing professionals to the practice of patient advocacy.
