What kind of education do you need to be a property manager?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 17, 2021

The kind of education you need to be a property manager is a high school diploma or equivalent, at minimum. Additionally, some real estate licensing coursework and a passing score on the real estate examination are typically required by state law.

Beyond a high school diploma, property management companies may require different levels of education and certifications from their property managers. Although the minimum is a high school diploma, many property management firms require a bachelor's or associate's degree. Standard fields of study in this industry include:

  • Risk Management

  • Property Management

  • Finance

  • Business Administration

  • Real Estate

Many companies also look for property managers who possess a professional certification from an accredited real estate organization. Standard credentials include the National Apartment Leasing Professional, the Certified Apartment Manager, and the most highly regarded designation, the Certified Property Manager.

This designation is the most highly regarded designation among property managers. This is because the requirements are the most rigorous to receive this certification. These requirements include the following:

  • Complete three years of consecutive employment in a qualifying real estate management role.

  • Hold a real estate license or verify they are not required to have a license in their current role

  • Meet a minimum of 19 out of 36 CPM Function Requirement activities to qualify for credit towards the certification

  • Meet all requirements within 12 months of enrolling in the course
